Strange Ebay stitch up!

Postby AndyRegs » Apr 22nd, '07, 21:05

I recently bought my girlfriend something off ebay (non magical), but was later told that the item and account had been removed because the acount had be hacked into by a third party we collected the funds. This was unfortunately after I had paid for it.
The odd thing is though, that I recieved the item this weekend. A fake item, but recieved none the less.
Why would a fraudster bother to send an item if they had hacked the account?
I cant put a dispute onto the account because its been removed.
Has anyone else had anything like this happen? Can I claim off ebay/paypal? The damn things cost me £52!

E-mail E-Bays customer support or phone them explaining the situation.

sounds like a con to me, the fact that you have recieved an item all be it a fake meens your money has not been stolen youv'e just been a victim of false advertising which peobably won't be covered by e-bay its a common scam.

wether youv'e been hacked and scammed is a problem as it could just be another layer of protection for the seller or a clever way of conning both you and the seller.

if the seller is inocent and also out of pocket then you don't even have a case of false advertising.

e-bay should have the slogans byer be ware and you pays your money and takes your choice banners plsaterd about.

I had a similar one a few months back when I purchased some computer software at a discount price. The ad specifically said that it was genuine and it was for that reason that I bought and it wasn't a huge discount over what it would have cost new but enough to tempt.

Anyway, the software arrived and it was a clearly a copy (which I still haven;t loaded by the way) but the same day that it arrived by post I received an email from ebay on my account to say that the trader had been suspended but didn't give a reason why so no chance of me complaining to the seller.

However, I noted that the money wasn't collected from my Paypal account and I successfully cancelled the payment and kept the money.

Once I bought a baseball signed by David Ortiz. The picture on the site looked real and the ball came with a certificate of authenticity. The signed ball cost $50 which was a real bargain. There were a couple of problems when it arrived, though. The "signature" on the baseball was nothing more than a squiggly line and the COA was obviously created and printed off this guy's computer. I managed to get the guy's account removed by eBay but I never got my money back.

lol sounds like Paul Wilson's been on ebay,

i have a shop on there, a few weeks ago ebay crashed and wiped 80% of their accounts.. luckily the back server came on a few seconds later.. but any purchases in the time it was off went through but werent regonised by ebay.

But if you paid and the product arrived then i shouldnt worry about. If your not happy then the ebay product cover will apply up to the value of £500. you need to have the item number and fill in a disput form on the site... normally get back to you in 24 hours.

If paid with paypal you have 31 days to to make a claim.
Again fill in a online form.

My sisters boyfriend bought an iPod Nano which never showed up and the account was later deleted. Even though the account was removed ebay still refunded him the money since he had payed through paypal so I wouldn't worry too much since you're not the one in the wrong. Contact them and see what they can do to help!

I bought a pair of D&G sunglasses from ebay last year and the same thing happened to me. I got an email informing me that the sellers account had been wiped and my money was refunded.

A couple of days latter a pair of D&G (fake but looked good enough to get away wearing) sunglasses turned up. Probabaly a bit naughty but I kept hold of them

I have found ebay customer service to be completely unhelpfull in these situations. I had won an item, and they guy reused to to take any otherpayment other than western union, even though he had advertised paypal on the listing. The details sounded dodgey so i contacted ebay and just kept getting back automated replies!!

I still havent managed to get a reasonable response!

The reason that they have sent you a fake item is to get a tracking code for the package from royal mail. I presume they sent it via recorded delivery? Therefore receiving a tracking number as proof of transaction and of sending you the item. Also what you signed for the item, royal mail can vouch that the item had been sent.

If you payed via paypal you can dispute the transaction through paypal.com. Paypal will ask for proof of the seller sending the item and the proof is that tracking number - they see that you have received an item (they don't know what you have received and you cannot prove that you did not receive what was in the auction) then the dispute will be closed.

Unfortunately, it looks as though you have lost your money.

I got a rather worrying email recently saying my paypal account had been hacked and they were suspending it but I suspect it was fake cause I've used it since and nobody has used it to commit fraud
