Got a couple of Balls lined up which Ive never worked at before in. Their in just over a month. Its black tie so a DJ is a must but I find bow ties really uncomfortable.

Saw a few blokes in cravattes last time I was at a summer Ball and they looked SHARP. Only worried that cravattes are worn ONLY for wedding and id look an idiot or is this balloney? Thats what I thought anywho.

i prefer a nice thigh length pink number.... erm well thats enough of my problems..

you could try a clip on i use them if i need to wear a tie, bow tie or other.

Go with an open neck if the organisers that booked you are happy. Don;t take it for granted that you can wear what you want to wear if everyone else doesn't have a choice.

You lose nothing by asking but lots for taking things for granted.

The organisers are extremely liberal. I'm just curious as to whether a cravat is used exclusively for weddings :S

I couldn't find anything specific, in terms of a definative etiquette for the wearing of cravats, but - everything I *did* manage to find only seems to list their use in morning wear....here's a typical example;

"MORNING DRESS
Otherwise known as top hat and tails, morning wear is worn by male members of a wedding party e.g. Groom, Fathers of the Bride and Groom, Best Man and Ushers. Morning wear is also worn at other formal social events such as Royal Ascot, Royal garden parties, Trooping of the Colour, Investitures and other Royal or Court events. It may also be worn at society Funerals and Memorial services.

The traditional Morning Suit consists of a black or grey tailcoat worn with striped (for the black) or matching plain (for the grey) trousers. A waistcoat or vest (back-less waistcoat) should be worn over a plain white shirt. In most cases either a tie or a cravat is acceptable, although a cravat is best worn with a wing collar on the shirt. A black or grey top hat should accessorise the suit, together with a pair of lightweight grey gloves.

For weddings, where the individual bride and groom can determine just how conventional their dress code should be, alternative colours can be selected for the morning suit and accessories depending on current availability and fashion trends. A more colourful and expressive waistcoat is a very popular way of complementing the conventional morning suit and a wide selection is always available from your local branch of DAPPER Designer Dresswear or through this website. For "suited and booted" events, I've been sporting a very good suit and a wing-collar shirt open at the neck. What I'd really like is a bootlace tie with an occult symbol on the clasp to go with is, but can I find one anywhere, can I hellers like...

Your there to entertain - you want to stand out from the guests. You dont want them to think your a guest just showing off a trick.

Make them believe that you are there for them.

Wear what you feel comfy and relaxed in. the better you feel the better your 'job' will be and happier the client will be.

The problem with the cravat is that you most definately also have to wear a vest, and you can never take the vest off...

I wore one only once - and that was for my wedding... if that helps!
