Revealing secrets

Postby jacko » May 1st, '07, 17:56

Just seen the article below on the BBC news website:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/6612507.stm

Will be interesting to watch how this progresses and what if any impact it would have on other "reveal" shows...

There used to be a similar programme in Belgium, I don't remember what it was called, but they showed really great tricks and then just revealed how it was done... Same thing is all over YouTube... It's sad, because as the Japanese magicians say, you do all the effort to learn and perfect the trick and then it's ruined if someone happens to have seen the programme.....

Not much we can do I'm afraid

Mandrake,

Not to get petty or anything - but my original was posted at 4:26pm...

I've seen the trouble you get into for not using the search function before posting

didn't there used to be, or is there still, a similar law here (UK) about defacing a coin of the realm or something?

There did, indeed, used to be a law, however this was repealed, and we brits are now free to mangle any and all UK coinage to our hearts content.

However...the same does NOT apply to bank-notes:

CURRENCY AND BANK NOTES ACT 1928

s 12 Penalty for defacing bank notes.

If any person prints or stamps, or by any like means impresses, on any bank note any words, letters or figures, he shall, in respect of each offence, be liable on summary conviction to a penalty not exceeding level 1 on the standard scale.

That said, it's not illegal to actually destroy bank-notes, just to deface them :?

the law one defacing coins comes from the days of gold coins and pieces of silver. When merchants and bankers used to shave the edges of coins to get the gold from them and later melt down. That also the reason that they started milling the edges of coins, so they couldn't be shaved.

See, I'm not just a pretty face :D
