Greetings from the USofA

Hello all!

My name is Robb and I am attempting to get back into a game that I was never truly in to begin with. My first exposure to the performing aspect came when I was eight. My grandfather bought me a cheap kid's magic set along with Mark Wilson's Complete Course in Magic. Needless to say the book was waaaaay over my head and I quickly lost the pieces to the magic set. The book went into a box and I just kind of dismissed it as being junk since I associated it in my mind with the cheap kids magic set. Little did I know. Flash forward twenty years and I am now studying everything I can rap my mind around in it.

I have enjoyed being a spectator to magic all of my life and only a couple of years ago when visiting Lance Burton's shop in Las Vegas did I get the desire to perform. Unfortunately I had no real desire to learn Magic 101 but just wanted a bunch of gimmicks bought on impulse and of course that's what the store caters to. However, I did hamg out at the shop a lot and was able to learn some basics from the resident magician on sales duty during slow times.

So... now my primary goal is to learn everything there is to know from Royal Road to Card Magic as well as tricks that grab my eye from Complete Course in Magic. That should take me a long while but I look forward to the challenge of it. I also plan to pick up a couple of more gimmicks and work on the ones that I already have when i tire from the study, study, study.

Here's a list of what I have and/or want. Please let me know your opinions on things that I might want to add and/or think twice about. Ideally I want to be a Jack of All Trades- good at all but master of none. That being said, I enjoy ropes the least and have zero experience with cups and balls. Here goes:

Instruction:
Mark Wilson's Complete Course in Magic
Amazing Magic Tricks with Sponge Balls DVD
Hamman Eggs/Cut Throat Casino VHS

Decks:
Stripper
Svengali
Brainwave
Vanishing
Cardtoon

Rope:
My Favorite Rope Trick (Might be "his" but I hate it. Will probaly never use it but never throw anything away.)

Coin:
Vault Vanish (Another that won't get thrown out but will never get used.)
Scotch and Soda
Cigarette Through Quarter

Defy Gravity:
Air Currency

Homemade version:
Self-tying Shoelaces

Prop:
Impossible Penetration
Burglar Ball
Hot Rod
D'Lites

Bought and on the way:
Royal Road to Card Magic DVD set
Haunted Key
ID
Raven X2
FRAUD

Considering but seem expensive for what you get:
In-Air
Nailed

Wantlist:
Paint Surprise by Devin Knight

That's it. Thanks for reading my long winded post. I look forward to contributing to the board.

Hi and welcome to TM

QUESTION:
If we can sue McDonalds for making us fat and cigarette companies for giving us cancer; why can't we sue Smirnoff for all the ugly gits we've sh*gged ??

Hello Rob, and a warm welcome from this side of the pond  ! If you are looking for some good magic, try Tarbell Course in Magic. 8 book series, and you are guaranteed to find at least one trick you like in each one.

Well you can't go wrong with Mark Wilson as a starting base, a very good book that one. Also look out for Karl Fulves Self Working books, he's got one on just about everything and they are very good.

Oh and welcome to TM :D
