Coin magic - Bobo's book - where to start?

Postby metharan » May 3rd, '07, 00:23

Hi all!

I am new to the forum, and to the world of magic as well!

After some advice from friends who are more experienced, I've just got hold of Bobo's book, but am not sure where to start practicing.

What coins should I use to practice as well (I am currently in UK studying, so what is the best coin for a beginner to start practicing?)

Thanks in advance!

£2 coins are close to halfdoolar size.
50p for shape.
2 p and 10p for spellbound changes.

Start from the beginning and work through it all nice and slowly.

£2 coins are great to start with, they're big and easy to handle.

Opie Houston of Texas has described a study plan for the Bobo book. I can't remember what it is though. However it is somewhere online.

Oh well done Mark, I'd forgotten about that. I've got a link to it scrawled down in my notebook somewhere. I'll see if I can find it.

As I opened that link (and found the study guide in the December 2005 page), the clouds parted and brilliant rays of sunlight shone down on me while choirs of angels sang a joyous hymn.....

Thank you for this invaluable tool... I have been reading/studying the book page by page and was having a harder time than learning calculus (and I had a VERY hard time with that in school!) because I was losing time and patience learning very difficult slights that I questionned if I would ever use. But I refused to read on until I had all the techniques and vanishes under control, not knowing which ones were more important than others... (a practice that was just not working very well).

I will continue with the book with new-found enthusiasm and confidence!

Yep. That's Opie's study guide.
The funny thing is that Opie is nearly as much a terror of magic forums as I am.
He might even be a member here for all I know.

I use a few things from Bobo. I should use more. I do the pulse trick, Coin to key, Sympathetic Coins and my favourite the Expansion of Texture. In addition virtually all my coin technique comes from that book.

Indeed he is with 40 posts to his credit and the most recent one only a couple of weeks ago.

Good link, Mandrake. That's different to the one I've got, mine must be old as it doesn't go anywhere any more.

page 1...seriously. The first 25 pages or so are really key with Bobo's and really well explained (atleast in my copy) The first chapter on coin concealment can be practiced anywhere (walking, sitting through class, watching tv) If you really REALLY get comfortable with chapter one before moving and doing the same with chapter 2 on basic tech. By the time you hit chapter 3 you should be finding things pretty encouraging, not to metion be pretty darn impressive..

I'd leave flourishes for later (wisely Bobo put it in the back) by the time you get through the first 25 pages you're new found dexterity should make most of it much easier.

That book is pretty great.

Bobo Study Guide

Thanks all for the nice comments.....The above link is to another source of the guide....

Bottom line on Bobo: Don't waste too much time on sleights you may never use. Play around with them, but spend most of your practice time working on presentation of something entertaining...

Glad to help any time...

I peek in here frequently, and I enjoy browsing....opie
