David Acer - On Screen and Other Mysteries

Postby Jordan C » Feb 12th, '04, 12:07

The Effect

Someone asks you to do a card trick (yet again) so you pull out a packet of cards. You get them to choose a card and return it to the pack. You then fumble around for the TV remote and switch the TV on, after flicking through a couple of programs you settle on a program and appear to mute the TV. You then take a couple of steps back and start to "ping" the cards at the TV. After all the cards have fluttered to the ground one card appears to be stuck on the screen when suddenly a man on the street appears and walks up to the camera (your TV screen). He pulls the card through the TV screen and into television land. He looks at the card and shows it the screen revealing it to be the spectators card, he then walks away........... You pick up your friends jaw from the floor!!

Review

The actual instructions for the effect come in a scrolling star wars style text roll on the screen. This I was a little annoyed with at first because as I am fairly new to card magic I could have done with learning a couple of methods of forcing the required card and then controlling that card within the deck. That said though I have managed to fumble through a couple of clumsy (but undetected) forces and havent been caught out yet.

There is an approx 1-2 minute section of video on the dvd that you obviously have cued up and quite simply if you get your timing right and dont spring the cards at the screen too quickly then you will achieve great impact with this effect.

The "Other Mysteries" element of the DVD is what makes the whole thing totally worthwhile. There are some hilarious moments on this DVD with David including some outtakes at the end of each trick segment. There are guest appearances from the likes of Jay Sankey, Richard Sanders, Michael Huot and others, and there are 21 fantastic tricks to learn. Tricks like:

Spring Change
Ultimate Aces
On Bended Knee

and lots of other little Card and coin Mysteries.

Overall

10/10

Definitely worth getting. Funny, lighthearted and entertaining way to learn some magic.

Thanks for the review Jordon. It looks very interesting.

Personally, I'm not convinced about the "on screen" trick as you would be pretty limited as to where you could actually perform it. ie, once you have fooled the family and had all the friends over that would pretty much seem it. It reminds me of that penn and teller classic where wassisname - the newsreader guy reveals the card halfway through a news broadacast.

What about the other 21 tricks - I'd appreciate a review of them too if you get a chance?

cheers

As mentioned in my review the 21 other tricks make this worthwhile. If I get a chance I will go thru them and review them. But suffice to say that there are some absolute gems on this DVD and yes David Acer is a nutter and totally hilarious.

The on screen effect may not be useable all the time but I'm sure an inventive magician can work this into any of their perfomances on stage or at other peoples houses.

My favourite trick out of the 21 is Ultimate Aces. You show three indifferent cards and three aces with another ace placed down to the side. You put the three indifferent cards with the lone ace and you put the three aces in a pile separately. you pick up the aces and using SPring Change (also taught on the DVD) the aces visibly change into the three indifferent cards. When the pile containing the "indifferent" cards is turned over they are all in the aces. Very visual, very dramatic with a big "W.T.F!!??" factor thrown in.
