Really - seventeen quid on a pack of cards? There are FAR better things you can spend your money on.

Your being harsh here, he came for advice, and of course hes a teenager seeing how hes got a set amount of money. £36 can be quite a large sum to some people so theres no need to take the pi*s out of him. Everyone has got to start somewhere.

Defiantly the Ghosts for me theres no better deck, they look amazing and handle perfectly.

So you should get -

x2 Red/Blue Bicycle Deck (Both the same color preferably) - Practice decks.
x2 Ghost Deck - Performance Decks
x1 Royal Road To Card Magic - Book
x1 Expert Card Technique

Save the rest and save up for a ghost gaff deck for when you have learnt a substantial amount learnt from the two books.

I blew loads of money on junk when I first started

Now I'm not into trick decks myself, so I cannot talk definitivly about particular decks

But some of these trick decks are black and white and it's quite difficult to read the indexes or court cards. I tried some at the local magic club, and they handle just like ordinary cards, the pro using them you had to be carefull not to confuse the specs with them. (do others agree?) Now I know this can be overcome by good delivery and spec control, so some of you guys who are good may not notice any difficultys in this area. But if I were just starting out I would choose standard bikes red back and blue back.
There are far to many things to be concentrating on when learning to worry about reading the indexes properly (or even having specs read them properly). Plus there expensive and your going to get through a few packs just practicing!

Am I right guys? As I said I am not into these decks and so cannot reliably comment. Please feel free to blow my theory out of the water.

(sigh perhaps I'm just getting old)

Funny thing is, where's he gonna be when those fancy decks wear out and he's left penniless? That's cheered me up.
