Good sticky tape

Postby bronz » May 7th, '07, 11:38

Hey y'all, does anyone regularly stick things to themselves with sellotape? If so what brand is best for doing so? I got an effect recently which requires me to stick thread to myself and the generic tape in my cupboard seems to lose it's stick rather quickly and fall off.

Hey bronze!

Without tipping anything, can you give a little more detail?

Ie - is it one, long length of thread, or is it a length which has been balled-up/folded over several time on itself?

I'm guessing that standard sellotape (depending upon whether it's stuck to cloth or skin) would have a very variable 'stick-span' (especially on skin, where the natural oils will cause obvious problems).

Consider the adhesion difference between elastoplast and sellotape, for example...

Okey dokey, it's for a levitation effect (surprise!) and the length of thread is about an arm long. So 2-3ft I suppose. It's a single piece of thread that supports a small object about the same weight as an average coin or ring.

I would in fact like to know how to ball up the thread and keep it in position for when I need to perform the routine which shall not be mentioned, but it's probably a case of pm'ing here for reasons of exposure. I'm pretty sure the trick uses the same hookup as Hummingbird card but I don't know for certain as I don't own it. Sorry for the obfuscation but any posts or pms would be great.

Wax.

Attach one end of the thread to a an old playing card by balling it up in wax and pressing onto the card.

Then, either wedge the card about your person, or stick the card to yourself with double-sided tape.

Wax really is your friend here. It won't stick to your flesh that well, but it really does stick to nails, belts, spectacles really well.

If you want to attach directly to flesh, use band-aid or sticky plaster... it's made for the job ;)

Good idea Seige, I'll chop a small bit off a plaster and use that. It needs to be stuck right on flesh really but fortunately it won't be visible where it's going....

yup, a plaster is what I usually use. Nice thing about it is that you can stick it somewhere visible and no one will notice anything odd (that's how I managed to get around the problem of not being able to get a PK ring that will fit me).

It seems like a couple of people are suggesting alternatives to tape, but I've found Scotch double-sided tape is very strong.
