don't pick a card

Postby Mikey.666 » May 7th, '07, 18:07

ok. so, i was doing a few routines today at my mates shin-dig. everyone seemed to be impressed. however, when i put my cards away, i thought "god that was broing" i came home and counted the effects i did and there were FAR too many pick a card effects. these are strating to bore me quite a bit now, as the outcome is generally te same, i found your card!

so i was wondering if any of you cared to share some of your favourite "none-pick a card" effects.

cheers :)

EDIT: by share i don't mean tell me how they're done, just the names of them :P cheers :)

I have found this as well. Off the top of my head ootw is a good one. Ace productions, poker hands, jumping gemini--that goes for most packet tricks actually.

Cant think of anymore for the time being!

Twisting the Aces before or after Daley's Last Trick, Gemini Twins, perhaps something like Lottery by Sankey, erm can't think of much more that I do regularly at the moment but those are very strong and don't follow the usual pick and find a card plot.

The artist who does not rise, descends.

Ace productions

I would do ace productions also, they really get people to go: whow! Lets see what else. Topsy Turvy, but not as one trick maybe just to start up a trick or glimse a card. Montes, they don't have to pick a card in those. :)

I that This 'n That and Color-changing Decks are always good alternative to pick-a-card tricks. Also, if all else fails, do a coin matrix with some change in your pocket!

You mean Color Monte (TNT was a variation of it which appeared on Youtube and then, sadly, marketed as an individual effect).

My personal favourite would be the Classic Eleven Card Trick (Paul Harris Version, Art of Astonishment Volume One)... although strictly speaking that does have a 'pick-a-card' element but it's so damn fun and magical that nobody really minds :D.

Printing of a blank deck is quite straightforward and lay people like it.
Three card monte impresses too.

I'm always performing monte routines. they are ace!

thanks for the help so far.
i was thinking of adding a stroy line to my jumping gemini routine...as that is also getting a bit boring, and a bit too similar to my monte routines. anybody have any ideas? :)

Mikey, have seen the monte routine in the first Apocalypse?
It's so simple to do, but a killer!

Another good effect whcih although the spec DOES choose 3 cards is Roy Walton's Pass At Red, bearing in mind you can do a pass. This can work as a suggestion/hypnosis effect which is how I present it.

On Volume 4 of David Regal's Premise, Power & Participation DVD's he has a trick called "The Very Last Card". The entire premise of the trick is that his grandfather used to hate young David making him pick a card and in honour of his now deceased grandfather he has a card NOT selected. He and an entire audience of spectators eliminate an entire deck of cards bar one card. A card which was predicited from the very beginning.

He has a fantastic presentation and a very ingenious method for the trick. I've never performed it the same way he does but I have tried to create my own version of this trick in several ways, which have been relatively successful.

I think it would make a good presentation to the trick if you did a few "pick a card" tricks with people and moved on to tell them you and your audiences have been known to get bored of "pick a card" tricks and you'd like to try something a little different, like having a card NOT selected.

If it sounds good try and get hold of his DVD to see his great presentation and method or just take what I've written and create your own method. Just make it fun and try to relieve that boredom.

I always like Color Fusion but you need to pre-set the deck. I usually use a preset deck and have the tricks arranged so that the deck is eventually cleaned of all gimmicks so you then have a straight deck to continue with ambitious card or whatever.

I have always gotten a good reaction for Color Fusion.

If you've tried Color Fusion and don't like it, try it with a prefolded duplicate and a reverse, it works way better, in my opinion, than any version I've seen. This way they actually fold the card themselves and then sign it on top of the deck. *Plus, when you go to rip the card, you can put the card away so you can later switch decks or (if you remember where they are) leave any gimmics in your pocket when you take it back out.

lottery as mentioned above floors lays although it is "pick a card"it differs as 5 people pick cards.
also, card warp is nice.

A good poker deal routine done well can be entertaining for the right crowd.

not a fan of sigs, so I won't bother adding o..... oh

Yep - I'm certainly with you on this one; for quite a number of years, I stayed away from cards, totally - all due to this particular cliche.

Trouble was, coming from a family containing more than one hobbyist magician, I'd been exposed to that many 'Pick a Card...put it back...oh look, here it is...' effects that anything to do with cards left me feeling cold.

That was before I discovered the 'kickers' (yes - I did spell that correctly :wink: );

- Dream of Aces
- In A Flash
- Signed-Coin-to-Signed Card
- Holey Sh*t...

.....the list goes on, but you get the gist. Whilst many of this type of effect ceratinly still commence with 'Pick a Card', the actual strength of the magic lies elsewhere in the effect.

Guess who really quite likes cards these days?!!

Invisible Palm and Torn and Restored are two of my favourites. I try to limit my card routines to one, at most two pick a card and here it is routines.
