Coin Boxes

Postby Farlsborough » May 7th, '07, 15:04

Hey all,
As part of my drive to go over some of the "classics" of magic (which has seen me take great delight in the TT of late), and having as I will a bit more spare time on my hands after exams in a few weeks, I'm looking at... ta daa, coin magic.

My Goshman pinch is really quite good now, I've got quite a lot of the sleights down, so I am now looking into the world of coin boxes as for some reason they really appeal to me... I love the rustic honesty of a worn little brass box, they seem to be quite "gentle" in delivery - the perfect thing perhaps for after dinner with the grandparents!

I haven't got my copy of Bobo in Leeds so I don't know what it says about them in there if anything, but I wanted to know if anyone has any tips on starting out with coin boxes, perhaps the difference between an okito and a boston etc, and which you would advise...

I'd also like to know if anyone in the UK uses coin boxes successfully and if so, whether there is a special size better suited to UK coins, or whether you just do it with good old half dollars and old english pennies.

Finally, I understand they work quite well in conjunction with gimmicks such as E.S.s, but as I'm not too well off at the moment I'd like to stick to just the box, the coins and some sleights for now!

Thanks guys and girls.

I use the large and small Okito boxes (they are also good for ring vanishes)...I have a set of 10p sized boxes, a regular large okito for half dollars/old pennies and a large boston okito as well. Check out David Roth's stuff on Okito boxes. Great!

I have Okito boxes which fit the old 10p and the current 5p - both are fine. The brass is a pain to keep bright, though - any suggestions?

My 5p box has a weighted bottom. I was once asked why........It isn't really necessary.

Bobo does have a chapter on coin boxes.

Then lacquer of some kind as the metal soon goes dull again.

Not a coin box but have a look at an effect called coin squeeze mine was sitting in my drawer but I got it out a week ago and I love it and it only costs about a tenner from alakazam.Pretty much self working aswell the only thing you have to be able to do is a vanish and that's not even nessacary.
