hmmm yes, its a question i've seen kinda asked before in roundabout ways...so i'll put this out there, see what you all say...

How far would you like to go in magic? I'm talking the absolute peak of your dreams here...

Are you happy keeping it as an esoteric hobby for your own entertainment and for those down the pub moments and family gatherings?

Do you want your name up in lights somewhere shiny and bright?

Or something in between?

For me, if i really could "get what i want", a step into fantasty land here, would be some kind of consultant on a tv magic show..i think that would be marvellous...

Saddo that I am, I'm happy to stay at very amateur, friends and family level - at the moment.

As for being a consultant on a TV magic show, I think Jonathan Creek has that job ! However it would be good to be involved in the background on such an event, none of the stress of performing but a quiet satisfaction that you've helped to bring about a very entertaining experience for a lot of people. I guess the guys with Derren Brown might feel a bit like that.

Some of my dreams are being realised in that a name of mentalism is releasing some of my material in various forms, and I've become a student of his - which has been a very useful and enlightening experience and I'm learning a great deal.

I don't have any desires to be huge in the sense of having my own TV show or whatever. Just doing it, working out there and learning all the while is enough for me. I'd also like to have more input into the creative side of things, kind of like yourself abraxus... maybe doing some consultancy, releasing some of my material over the years. That's enough for me

I suppose the perfect situation for me would be a full time performer with a good reputation and many repeat clients.
The fame game holds no personal interest to me and just the chance to do something I love is more than enough for me without the trappings of celebrity and having what I love turn into something that completely dominate my life. I love magic but other things do come first

I'd love to have a regular stage or cabaret type show. That's a long long way off for me yet but you never know. As the song goes 'if you don't have a dream, you'll never have a dream come true' (or something like that anyway)

When I saw the thread title I thought it might be another attempt at chatting-up Lady of Mystery.

Anyhow, I'm happy keeping things at a hobby level for my own amusement and - hopefully - friends and family. It's nice to get a warm feeling when people tell you that you could be doing it for money but that's good enough for me. I've no designs on getting paid work. I'm not really the 'performer'-type.

For me personally I want it all fame,fortune,papparazi chasing me down the street when I fall out of a west end club half naked with a blow up sheep and rehab from all the drink and drug addictions from the pressures of fame.

No joking aside I don't really care how far I go as long as I'm entertaining people that's the most important thing for me but if I could choose I wouldn't mind having my own tv show or being involved with someone elses. Plus I would like a few effects released or if all that doesen't work out I'd even settle for my own brick and mortar shop

Id like to be a creator of effects.. thats what Im working towards as a peak.. and have some regular bar and restaurant work..

i reackon i want to be the best performer i can be, fame and fortune aren't that attractive. but being a great performer that people can admire even only in certain circles does sound like a good dream to chase. i quite fancy branching out into other fields of entertainment which have nothing to do with magic (tv presenting or theatre acting) i reackon do the best job i can and let the chips fall as they may....oh professional poker player ow that sounds fun.....

I am envious of people who do it for a hobby and nothing else. They get more fun out of magic than anybody.

I have always said that as soon as money enters the picture the fun tends to diminish. Not completely and not always but more often than not.

Thats interesting Mark, something I've never really thought about. Once money is involved, it kinda becomes your job so to speak? Seems about right- when I was at uni I was always going on about architecture and buildings. Then after a while of working all day everyday, the novelty wears of and I looked at other things to play about with (magic).

For me I just love it as a hobby, not so much for friends and family but more for myself. Altho I love the idea of having an actual shop on a high street.

Having people coming in to check things out and all the daily hussle and bussle sounds good to me.

Money always changes things. It's great to get paid to do something you love, but when it overtakes the love of it as being why you do something, it can make you feel trapped and cynical.
