Surely they mean typeface?

sorry thought I'd get in with that before Seige does

Actually, they do mean to say 'font' in that instance, but notice the references to 'typeface' in the article by those who know of what they speak.

I actually contributed an article to that page this morning, but it never got posted, which was a retort to Helvetica haters.

People who find it bland merely have no grasp of the art of typography, as Helvetica can be beautifully simple in both body copy and display.

For those of you who like unusual fonts (typefaces, bowls of jelly, super intelligent shades of the colour blue, the whole "letters and squiggles thing", whatever they're called), there's 1001 free ones here: http://www.1001freefonts.com/

Although, be aware, many 'free' faces can actually play havoc with your computer, as their IDs etc. aren't properly formed.

If you install a few, and start having weird problems, remove them and you will get back to normal.

Oh, and if you send someone a document, don't expect them to have the same fonts as you. Use PDF instead.

Font: a collection of characters a certain weight and style from a typeface family... i.e. Helvetica Bold, 10pt

Typeface: a character set design

ERGO

What you have on your COMPUTER is a TYPEFACE, as it is flexible. Helvetica is a typeface, which contains subsets of itself—i.e. bold, italic, bold italic, roman etc.

I actually do still have some 'fonts'... they are in neat little cases and are probably worth a bit of money. For instance, I have a collection of Helvetica fonts in hot metal: a case of 10pt roman, and a case of 10pt bold. Each case has numerous little letters on pegs.

Just thought I'd clear it up ;)

Does anyone know why they used to use antimony as the metal for movable type?

It's the only metal to expand on cooling.

Well...

Actually most type is tri-metal alloy. My type is made of a high lead composition (it has a tiny warning about handling on the case!)

I did say "used to use"

It's toxic!
