Two thousand and...

Postby shaneking » May 4th, '07, 21:38

Here is something I have been considering since 1999.

We say in the UK the year 2007 as two thousand and seven. We have been calling the last years similarly. i.e two thousand and something.

Now, the battle of Hastings was in TEN sixty six, not one thousand and sixty six.

Logic suggests therefore that we will call the year 2066, twenty sixty six.
So, when do we make the crossover from saying two thousand and something to twenty something.

My gut feeling since 1999 is that we will say two thousand and nine, twenty ten, twenty eleven etc etc.

And whilst I am in a reflective mood, what is the next decade going to be called ? The teenies (even though 2010, 2011 and 2012 are not "teenage" years"). Oh, life was so simple twenty years ago......

Oh yeah, I never really thought about that. I'm sure it will be 2010 when we cross over because everyone talks about the Olympics being in Twenty Twelve rather than two thousand and twelve.

Good point about the twenty twelve olympics thing. I suppose it's all down to how the media put it. If newspapers all say it, the public will!

Nice work Mandrake

I'm looking forward to twenty sixty two and my 100th birthday

if you look at the short date format then how would you work out 10.10.10? :?

It's not really an optical illusion - it just looks like one!
