Anything I need to know ahead of time? Other than hair smells terrible when burned?

Somethings you need to know are:

1. As soon as that flame touhes that paper, LET GO!!!

2. Flash Paper is less likely to do damage if folded or scruched, since a straight sheet from a flash pad can create a flae for as long as 5 seconds

3. Don't just use it in your act for nothing, or just because it "looks cool". If you are going to use it, use it as part of a routine such as changing the paper into a cigarette or a coin. I recommend some of Sankey's older videos such as Non Stop Party or his effect, In A Flash.

Hope this helps! Good luck, and remember to practice with it before using it. Everything about it must be timed and tested.

Great! Glad to see you like Jay Sankey magic! I am a HUGE Sankey fan, and I also recommened you pick up Sankey-Skutt Sessions DVD. Tns of great magic on that, and it is by far my favourite Sankey DVD so far. I also recommend Wrap It Up and Holy Moly, two great close up effects that I love.

Have fun with fire!

I love flash paper. Last year in my chemistry class, we were talking about how some solids can change directly to vapors without becoming liquids first. My teacher didn't have any available, so the next day I brought my flash pad in and I let him use it to demonstrate what he was talking about. Magic and science, who knew?

Mate, I set my first flash paper alight last week

DO NOT LET GO!!!!

Hold on, you'll thank yourself for it.. it feels a tad bit warm.. but its beautiful!!

Letting go makes you look like your scared of it.. which you shouldnt be..

Flash is your friend now..

And in a flash is brilliant..

I generally now use flash paper in stores.. I hand them a piece of 'tissue' and when they look at me funny, I apologise and flash the paper and I am left holding a £5 note!! and casually hand this to them 8)

^^ Seconded - it's pretty unlikely that you'll actually burn youself with FP, even hanging onto it (it's more of a 'scorch' - kind of akin to passing your fingers slowly through a candle-flame).

Really, I'd advise you to give it a go, before performing with it, so you get a feel of how best to handle it.

Nothing worse than using something like this, for the very first time, in front of an audience...without having practised in advance

If doing a vanish, I find it best to throw the paper up a little as it ignites. This keeps the flame in a smaller area for longer as it goes up to the apex then down. Seems easier to follow for the specs, and less distracting.
Otherwise it doesn't look right as it just drops and burns. Kind of an anti climax.

And if you are doing a vanish, then I think it's essential that you don't hold onto it. Sort of doesn't make sense.

I agree with this.......i too have just started to use flash paper and the little throw up in the air dose make a big difference.

I was also wondering if there was any books or dvd's you would recomend that are dedicated to tricks with flash paper???

I also have some ideas of my own that im going to put into practice!

Can I just say that I have burnt myself quite nicely whilst using flash paper so do be careful.
I was performing 'in a flash' without a table to set it down and during the burn I must have tilted my hand slightly so the parcelled up coin slid onto my fingers griping the pack as the flash paper burnt away. Luckily being the true pro I took the pain, completed the effect, took my applause and then scurried to the gents to find a cold water tap.
I do agree though that if scrunched up then flash paper shouldn't burn.

I think in this case you just burnt your self on the coin, rather than the paper itself!! I HAVE DONE THE SAME

Yep - the coin does actually get pretty darn hot during In A Flash; it's a great convincer to actally give the spec the still-very-warm coin to hold, which you thumb off the burned cards

I think if doing a penetration such as in magus capsule let go.. with a vanish you could thow it in the air, but with a transposition such as crumpled up flash paper to a £10 note.. hold onto it..

it depends on what you are doing.. it really isnt that hot.. its the coin that takes the heat though in In a Flash
