Dazed and confused.

Currently I am sitting on well over 2 million tricks. Well in writing of course. I have tons of information but don’t really know what to do with it. Does anyone have an idea of how one should start? Everyone gives you books to read and dvds to watch. But no one really explains on what to do after that. Should I study and learn every trick? Should I select a few tricks and learn them? Should I select tricks to make a routine and learn those? I am so confused. Could someone please explain to me how they started there journey into magic?
feel free to reply to the post or pm me!
And thanks in advance.

Well, the very first thing you should do on here is pop over to the Introductions forum and tell us a little more about yourself and your knowledge of magic. Then we'll know exactly how to advise you.

Secondly, in terms of what you should learn, no one can tell you that. It's purely a matter of learning what appeals to you. However, concentrate on learning a few tricks well, certainly don't try and learn everything because you'll end up knowing a lot of stuff badly. Once you have an effect smooth enough that you feel able to perform it live go out and do it to as many people as possible. Only by doing this will you discover what works and doesn't work for you.

Spend as much time as possible practicing the basic sleights you'll need for the effects, when you're on the train, in front of the tv, on here, get used to having cards or coins or rabbits or whatever in your hands to build up the muscle memory you'll need to get better.

Hi Aaron - welcome to TM

Before you get started, you may want to pop across to the 'Introductions' section of the Forum, and let us all know a little more about you, and your interest in magic.

Hmmm - you say that you've been given thousands of effects in the form of books/DVD's? You must have some pretty generous friends

In case you've acumulated these by other means (and I mean this in a friendly way) be cautioned that any discussion of copied, downloaded or otherwise 'bootlegged' materials are strongly frowned-upon in these parts; not saying that is the case here, of course

The best thing to do is to start with the very basics and work through those slowly. I don't know what books you've already got, but Mark Wilson's Complete Course, Royal Road to Coin Magic and Bobo's Modern Coin Magic are three very good places to start from. Work through the books slowly, learn what they're teaching you. When you've finished the book, go back over it again, this time making a note of any good tricks. You can then start to build a routine using these tricks.

That's the best thing to do, take it one step at a time and be patient. Get confident in one bit before moving on to the next.

I agree with what Lady of Mystery said, unless you've got the basics, everything else will be worthless to you. If you have read those books to some extent, begin to look at the books that will adress the type of magic that you favor the most.

I'd personally start by going through Mark Wilsons book first, work through it step by step and learn what's in there. When you finish each section, go back and pick a couple of tricks and learn them well.

Once you've finished Mark Wilson's book you should have quite a good idea of the type of magic you enjoy and want to get into.

Some people find Bobo and Royal Road quite difficult to get into to start with, Mark Wilson gives brilliant foundations for these books and learning what is in his book will make getting into Royal Road and Bobo mcuh easier.

I think you should take your email address out of your post. Spam bots will find it, and they will spam you and share your email address. I can guarantee you that.

As for your question, I think it's already been said- Pick a few tricks you like, which don't involve too many sleights, and practice them. For at least a week, then perform it for a friend...

The way I started to larn tricks, was I'd spend about an hour or so practising the trick, show a family memeber, ask them to tell me what they thought and then spend about another day practicing, possibly show the same family member, and get feedback again. Then just practice the trick 'til your confident with it, and maybe even add your own twist to it, such as a personal patter.
