Hello everybody!!

Hi all,

I'm Adam, I'm 25 years old from good old Bristol, England (no I don't work on a farm :o ) and am thinking of teachng myself some magic!!

I've never attempted it before and you got to start somewhere..

I'm mainly interested in trying coin and card tricks and haven't got a clue where to start! Which tricks are best for a complete beginner? I assume practicing in front of a mirror is a good place to start?!

Anyway back in the days when I started to learn the guitar I taught myself from a book and got on well this way and I was looking at this book on amazon - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Modern-Coin-Mag ... 66-0774306

Anyway have a nice day and any advise would be appricated

Cheers,
Adam

A great big warm TM welcome, Adam - great to have you with us :D

If you're looking specifically at cards and coins, to being with, you will find everything you need to get off to an excellent start with 'The Royal Road to Card Magic', and Bobo's 'Modern Coin Magic' (both readily available at Amazon).

Mirror or Vid-cam practise is, indeed, very important (I once spent an entire six-week school holiday in front of a mirror, Front/Back-Palming - many moons ago!)

I'm sure you'll find TM a great help on your journey, and look forward to seeing you on the boards very soon :D

Hi Rob!

Funny you should mention the other book as I was just about to edit my first post and include it

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Royal-Road-Card ... 66-0774306

These (to me anyway) look like really good ones to take a look at to get me started.....

Would you say books are indeed the best place to start?? Or is there any other media worth taking a look at?

Thanks for your help!

Hi Adam,

Books are a great place to get started, much better value for money than some of the one trick DVDs that are about.

I always recomend Mark Wilson's Complete Course in Magic as a great place to start. Covers all different areas of magic from cards, sponge balls to metalism, the card section in it is very good by the way.

Also have a look out for Karl Fulves Self Working Magic books, there are some really great tricks and ideas in those.

Oh and welcome to TM :D

Always pleased to be able to help, Adam :D

Aside from these two books, to be going on with, the very best advice I could possibly give you is to spend some time each day, trawling these very boards.

You'll find a whole glut of really useful information on here, both aimed at beginners and more advanced members, and I've found quite a lot of the posts really do take my thinking in a different direction.

Only other piece of advice for now - take it slow, and don't be afraid to shout for help, if you need it :D

All the very best with your apprentiship,

Rob

Hi there!

Thanks for the advise! I think I'm gonna avoid DVD's for the minute...

Any good Websites I could bookmark?

Cheers man!!

I expect it's like learning the guitar, take it slowly and gradually build up speed. God how am I going to fit everything in?

At least I could practice coin tricks at lunch time! I don't think work would want me practicing the guitar in the office!

I think I'm gonna go for this - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Royal-Road-Card ... 66-0774306

Both books for £12.96! Sounds like a bargain to me and not exactly breaking the bank

Now then, where to next on this forum :?

That really is a very good deal indeed. With those under your belt, you'll have enough to be going on with for a couple of months at the very least, and they really are a brilliant foundation in their respective genres :D

I'm not sure about others, but - whenever I've just decided on a forthcoming purchase - I always like to check the reviews for the item here, using the Search feature. Here's the Royal Road review for you:

Enjoy :D

Cheers man!

The annoying thing is that I won't have my books over the weekend! They'll arrive next week

Ah well, just have to be patient!

One more question!! I promise! :P

Would you recommend me buying a new deck of cards? Or should I, in an ideal world be able to perform them with any pack??

If you would what ones would be best to get?

Cheers!!!!!!!

As a rule of thumb, any decently-produced deck will be fine to use with RRTCM.

However....if you suspect that you may want to use certain special (aka 'gaffed') cards with your normal packet in the future, you should be looking to invest in a couple of packs of Bicycle Poker-size Playing cards (cheapest on-line price @ £1.50 per deck, from magicbox.uk.com).

Most gaffs are only available in this design.

Hope this is of use mate! :D
