Looking for title of a movie about a magician

Postby bbasic » May 22nd, '07, 22:33

I watched this movie a long time ago, and there is only one scene I remember, but I hope you could help me.

The main point (as I remember) was a trick with three safes one into the other. The magician enters in the middle one, then all three are locked, and all three keys are put in the fourth safe (which is more a box than the safe). The magician has three minutes to escape (because that is how much air he has inside), but something "goes wrong" and the doctor arrives at scene. When the safes are opened, they are found to be empty, and than the doctor removes his wig — it is our magician.

I have no idea when this movie was made; all I know is that is at least 10 years old.

I am almost sure (about 95%) that it was in English, but I have no idea whether it was American or British or something else (though probably not 'something else').

The magician was the main character. I will try to write something more, but do not take the following paragraph for guaranteed:

The trick with three safes was something considered impossible. I even think that it was said that Harry Houdini had said that this trick was impossible to perform (but though i AM SURE that Houdini was mentioned, it may be in completely different manner; it is even possible, but with very small probability, that our magician in fact was Houdini — however, I am almost positive that this was not the case). Then the trick was performed as I described, and I even think that that was the end of the movie.

This is all I remember, but I believe I described it well enough and that there would be no problem to help me find the title of this movie.

Thank you for your answer. I searched at IMDB and I asked the people there; they were not able to help me and suggested to try here. I hope somebody else watched this movie.

They've been planning on 'remaking' that film for ages! As long as they don't repeat the same awful 'fictionalising' of the story as in the Tony Curtis one it will be a vast improvement - it can't be any worse :( .

Thank you for your suggestion, but that's not the one. I watched it yesterday, and there is no the nested safes trick in it. (Is there maybe an alternate version)?

Hey bbasic, I don't want to sound rude, but you have been here for a couple of days and you still haven't posted an introduction in the "Introductions" forum. It would probably be best if you did that so people would know what kind of magic you're into and what your aspirations for performing are.

Yes I remeber seeing this movie ages ago! I have no idea what it's called though either. But I found this which could well be it I don't know, maybe I'm thinking of a different movie but this looks a bit like the one I am thinking of, it's hard to tell without more information though.

Sorry, Mahoney, not that, but thank you anyway.

Does anybody have any other idea?

Mahoney, could you remember just any other detail from the movie in case somebody remembers it not by scene I mentioned but by a different one?

I remember a Tales of the Unexpected where an old lag is challenged to break into a state of the art safe. It's done live on TV, and if he manages to break into the safe he wins the money inside. If he doesn't he safe manufacturers have some great publicity and the old bloke has to hang his head in shame.

the guy pretends not to be able to break the safe. The TV producers and safe manufacturers celebrate their success. Meanwhile on a plane heading to Brazil the old lag's daughter has the loot in her handbag. The old bloke had gotten the money out in the first minute or so, and then pretended to be stuck for many hours until his daughter had chance to get away.

I know this isn't what you were looking for, but I felt the need to recount the tale. The safebreaking and the escape with money is basically a magic routine waiting to be given life.
