My first Trick- Please review

Postby SirDrake » May 30th, '07, 22:30

Hello this is my first trick ever, I was practicing the houdini color change and while I was at it I came up with this one, I call it THE EVER PRESENT A OF ACES. I'm not sure if it already exists so please let me know what do you think.

I'm trying to get into magic so any tips are greatly appreciated.

Here it is:

Sorry about the video quality, it was shot with a cellphone. Anyway this is a continuous shot and there are not edits or gimmicks whatsoever.

ok firtstly, can i recomend that you go and have a read befoe you post, maybe even introduce yourself so we know who you are!

Secondly, the video quality is very poor, maybe find another way of recording your tricks

Thirdly, practiswe practise practise, you card handling was poor and i didnt really understand what the trick was, due to the lack of sound, and a little patter to go with it!

No hard feelings!

Matt

Welcome to the forums! :D

The first thing I would ask is: where's the magic? At the moment all it is is a demonstration of card control; to make it into a magic effect you would show the card going into the middle of the deck only for it to reappear on top.

Secondly - and this isn't really a criticism because you're new to magic - the card handling needs work; once that improves, the impact of the effect will improve somewhat too because you will be able to make the loosing of the card in the deck so natural and effortless. As it stands you are handling the cards in such a specific and deliberate way we (the viewer) conclude that you are doing something specific and deliberate. Again this will change as you become more experienced with handling a pack of cards.

Once it does you could present it, for example, as a superstitious performer trying desperately to get rid of the Ace of Spades - but no matter how much he shuffles it keeps finding its way back to the top. To progress the effect you would then make the appearances more and more magical: perhaps a DL to allow the card to magically appear back on top, then some visual appearances (colour changes) etc. etc.

If you don't already have it, I recommend The Royal Road To Card Magic.

Quite frankly, awful.

You need a hell of a lot more practice.

Is it just me, or are others getting pi*sed off with people coming to this forum and their first post being a shoddy video which is poorly executed and clearly have no skill, when they think there the next David Blane

thanks for the advice!

wow, that really suck huh??

Yeah, I need a lot of practice but basically what I thought that I needed the most was advice, someone that points me in the right direction. I really want to learn but as probably you all know it is not easy finding a mentor... specially where I live. :?

Thanks

Newp. Getting personal feedback and a critique is better than just reading a book and hope you're going about things in the right way.

You don't need a mentor, just an instructional book or DVD. There's plenty about.

Well you need to be able to do something before advise can be given, which would come from either a book or DVD!

Try royal road to card magic, work your way through the book and dvd and you should find yourself (like I am currently) improving daily

As said above, the card handling looks a little deliberate and it doesn't really seem that magical. I find I get a nice enough reaction from a quick D/L to show the Ace on top, slipping it into the middle of the deck and *snap* it's back on top again as if by magic.

patter always helps as well, and something like this would work better in a routine than as a standalone trick.

Uhhhh . . . what was the trick supposed to be?

Also, please post and introduction in the "Introductions" forum and tell us a little bit about yourself and the kinds of magic you like.
