New to Magic

Postby joss » May 31st, '07, 20:05

Hi all. I'm completely new to magic.

I saw someone do a trick in a pub, where they pushed a coin into a bottle through the base. I have found where I can buy a DVD explaining how to do it.
My questions are: What else will I need to do this trick? And, is it a bit too advanced for a beginner?

Thanks.

Hey, joss, nice to see you on the forums. To answer your question, yes, that is a bit advanced for someone entirely new to magic. I would suggest you start with the building blocks of magic and see where that takes you. I would get the books: Royal Road to Card Magic, Mark Wilson's Complete Course in Magic, and Bobo's Modern Coin Magic. Go through those books and then work on what you want to do then.

Thanks monker59, I've been looking through the forums and I've already got those publications marked. :D
What would you recommend I start with regards coin magic? I don't want to become a pro magician, but that coin in the bottle gag really impressed me.

*EDIT* Is it me, or is the search function here a bit whacked? I've tried looking for some pointers but a search throws up the whole forum nearly, if I look for anything!

Depends what you are into. If you are not into card magic, don't buy books or DVDs about card magic. Start by introducing yourself and get advice based on what you want to do, not "copy/paste" answers about the same books all the time.

Welcome to TM Joss!
A friend of mine started in magic by buying "restored soda can" and now he is into mentalist magic. That's why I pointed out you should enter on your own terms, not having to buy books or DVDs you will never use. Not all magicians are into cards or coins.
With warm greetings from Iceland!

Thanks for the welcome gunnarkr. I get what you say. I suppose if I want to get to a level of competence for that trick, I should concentrate on coin magic.
