That's pretty neat with all the psychological stuff.

Your vids are great, but they're very Derren Brown-esque. Do you have any concerns about being seen as a Derren clone? How do you deflect that perception?

I enjoy doing stunts like these in the 'States, but no one here has seen things like this like they have in the UK so I don't have to worry about performing stale material.

Hi Rob,

Thank you for the kind words :)

Firstly I am not so sure that they are Derren Brown-esque; they are psychological based. Derren is known for psychological effects, and it just so happens (due to my long history of psychology) that I also happen to do psychological effects :D

It is a whole area unto itself, magicans have placed Derren into this slot because they probably havn't seen much suggestion work before.

Although Derren has very much popularised these kinds of effects, to lay people this material is killer. They don't care if they have seen it before or if someone else has done it; they are just amazed that it can be done in the first place.

The psychology of walking up to a person and procuring their valued belongings is always something peaople have a strong emotion about, either "I wish I could do that", or "I bet that wouldn't work on me". This kind of reaction stops psychological effects from becoming stale in my opinion. For this reason I havn't had to deflect any perception of "Are You a Derren clone."

Thank you for raising a very good question :)

Kindest,

-Paul

Truly amazing stuff, like the Brainwave deck without the gaff and immensely more impressive :D

I understand what Rob was talking about, with Derren Brown being the only mentalist that the average man on the street is going to have heard of, I think it makes it all that more impressive to people, probably having never had this done to them before. Definitely an area I would like to take a deeper look at in the future maybe.

Good work

Very nice work.

What's the music in the background, by the way? It sounds very "This Mortal Coil" to me.

Thank you :)

I do recommend taking a deeper look into the rabbit hole; it's fun ;)

Thanks Tomo :D,

I'm not sure what the music is on the new clip. I will have to ask my AV team. I have recently had them get some music composed for me professionally; so it is probably not a band as such.

That was nice. One question though why dont you let us hear what you are saying?

I am master of misdirection, look over there.

We are not falling out young Welshy, we are debating, I think farlsy is an idiot he thinks I am one. We are just talking about who is the bigger idiot.

Thank you :)

There is one main reason why I have removed the sound for this one video, it is because there is no sound for it.

I am currently taking legal action against the company I hired to film some videos. A lot of filming was done and money taken from me, only to find out that the majority of the footage was unusable due to faulty microphone equipment.

As a good will gesture they sent me a number of video clips with horrible sound, or clips without any sound at all. There was agreat sequence where I did a blindfold run (without my glasses and with coins, gaffa tape, velvet pads etc.) through the busy city centre, and that footage is virtually useless.

I cannot say too much about this on a public forum for legal reasons.

So my AV editing team have had to do their best without sound for this one video. A few more from the set may be used without sound; it all depends on if they work without any sound. I think this one works for suggestion reasons, as it adds some mystery to the video for lay people; and that is who I aim my videos at.

I'm hiring another company to do some filming for me in the next month or two hopefully. So there should be some sound for you to try and back-engineer and work into your effect  lol

I hope this helps to explain the mystery of the missing voice :D

Kindest,

-Paul

Right--you both do psychological effects, but the Four Play effect seems straight out of Devil's Picturebook and the verbal pickpocketing bit straight out of the Trick of the Mind TV series. I can't speak from experience with psychological illusion, as my audiences in the US have never seen anything like it. With magic, though, I'm constantly being put in the same class as David Blaine and Criss Angel, even though I don't perform anything that my audiences may have seen the two in question perform on TV or otherwise!

Oh, no doubt. They are indeed great effects and that is the effect on the audience I hope to reach when I get my own act done. I do effects like this in impromptu situations, but I'm still planning my first stage act.

As a suggestion with the verbal card force, I think you could get a bigger spectator reaction if you pull the deck out of your pocket and hand it directly to them, letting them open it up and see that 1.) it is indeed a perfectly normal deck and 2.) their card is indeed the only card turned over in the deck.

Excellent work, sir! Keep up the good work and I look forward to seeing more videos.

Ciao,
Rob

Hi Rob,

Thanks again for your comments :D

I absolutely agree with you, infact the first few people who were apporached were given the deck to open and find the card; however, it wasn't working from a presentational point of view. The cards were being spread far too slowly, or so fast that they missed the reversed card etc. Couple this with the freezing temp of the day and you get cards dropping and other things.

It was such a cold day(it was filmed back in winter) and even I had trouble with the cards due to numb fingers.

You have some great comments though, and I am really please that you have made them :D I look forward to what you have to say about the videos that I want to film in a month or two; especially due to their ambitious nature.

Kindest,

-Paul
