i would suggest getting a decent coin trick, eg coin unique etc etc

the reason why i suggest coins is because coins seem more everyday than cards

The main advantage of cards is that there are so many different types of effect you can do with them, with coins you are more or less limited to making them vanish and reappear and it is down to your imagination to make something slightly more out of it (oh yes, you can stick things through them and put them inside of things too). Personally I would go for more cards, but then I always would!

If you think your captive audience are all carded out for the moment then coins are a good option as are many of the other effects that use random looking objects, matchboxes etc (matchbox mambo is a nice looking routine at a reasonable price if you can find it).

I would say to stick to stuff with ordinary objects and cards, preferably not gimmicked stuff, as you will be seeing these people almost every day and you're bound to get people asking you to "Do that trick with the coins"ect and if you don't have that trick with you, then that'll be pretty hard to get out of. Cards are very good, as nickj said there's so much you can do with them and a deck of cards is easy to carry around, if you are confident with them and your peeps at school enjoy card tricks then carry on with them. TT's are great for carrying around school, they take up very little space and there are loads of tricks you can do with it. I used to take scotch and soda to school with me but I was always paraniod in case I'd left it somewhere. I suppose i depends on what you are happy about taking with you. Just my opinion though.

And the reason we use the abbreviation TT is to avoid using the full wording in a public forum! Oh well, never mind!

Slapping your own face is OK because it feels so good when you stop  . And, as mentioned before, isn't it a shame that there isn't an abbreviation for 'abbreviation'?

More to the point, why is there no abbreviation for "short card"?

Think about it...
