Can anyone tell me how Bicycle cards became so popular with magicians? There's not much info on how they became the preferred choice.

I had absolutely no interest in card magic when I came here, though after reading the forums for a few days I'm already considering a stripped deck and Royal Road... Blast you!

They're cheap, the air cushion finish makes them good enough for anything in the right hands and they're in plentiful supply.

Tomo pretty much hit the nail. But they are also very cheap, which helps if you go through a deck in a couple of days

Plus they're so commonly used in America that no-one bats an eyelid, whereas people start to ask questions with fancy decks, assuming that something must be up with them. And all the gaffs and trick decks will come in bicycle format, so it's easy to incorporate those into your tricks without people getting suspicious.

Cheap and available sounds like a pretty good reason. Once I've got coins out of my system, I'll look at buying a stripped deck.
I can already feel myself slipping into the magical abyss.

I still don't think there's any type of magic as good as cards, not close-up anyway. Coins are nice and all, but to me there's something elegant about cards, they seem to carry a certain finesse.

Or maybe it's just me, I don't know. I certainly wouldn't want to limit myself to just one type of magic anyway.

Oh lordy! I only came here to ask about a coin trick. Been here five minutes, bought two coin tricks and Bobo's book, and have just ordered Royal road, a stripper deck, Rama deck and an ID.

Yep you'll do that alright, I spent £100 this weekend and I'm about to order Peter Harrison - connected today as well.

Oh and I'd be careful about saying that cards are better than coins (we all know that they are) but your likely to get a coin in the back of the head for pointing it out.

Incidentally I bought myself coin unique, I sat down to learn some sleights in coins and discovered that it definitely isn't for me. So I thought a gimmicked coin trick would do the job nicely for my routine. Ah well horses for courses.

Exactly the same happened to me!

In the space of 24 hrs I treated myself to Modern Coin Magic, Royal Road and a pack of Bicycle Cards.

A week later I bought a Derren Brown Book as well!

My missus thinks I've lost it!

It gets worse. I now have a wish list that runs into hundreds of pounds. And an Avatar.

Ah, another sufferer of CUPS. This will be interesting; I've never seen it sprout and develop before. I've just seen the horrible duration and aftermath.
