I have spent a lot of posts recommending Royal Road. It didnt do much for me. I got a couple of sweet routines from it, but Card College kicks RRTCM's ass to Dubai and back, then somewhere else.

Everything from Ellusionist strikes me as a waste of money nowadays too

o.k here goes...gulp...

My names andyregs...and I hate heirloom!!!

Unless you have the heirloom wallet (which I dont), it just seems very possible that there could be more photos in your wallet. If you think as a layman, what would be the first possibillity that pops into your mind when trying to find a solution, yep more pictures! Damn it!

I use a similar type of story, and just four outs using a couple of the photos (with no 'off by one) instead.

now there has been mumblings that there has been words spoken that do not exactly sing the praises of RRTCM and I have to say that in a way I have to agree. Not only this but...gasp...Bobo too.
Now before I am strung up as a heretic and then cast amongst the vultures I will say to my defence that the information contained within these volumes is fantastic but the writing is pretty dated and at times harder to follow than Oswald Mosley.

I agree that RRTCM and Bobo have dated writing but when it is re-read it can make sense. Bobo is like a little god send for me, but RRTCM didn't do much for me either.

i hated RRTCM when i skimmed through it, but loved it once i read it through, learning a chapter per month...

i quite like Mind Myth and Magick too actually...i really liked SAD, but i wouldnt say it's a "classic" as such...

Geist and Metalist Toolkit though should be seen as modern day classics...

dont forget, there's a massive difference between a book that contains great effects, such as SAD, and a book that contains great mechanics and principles...like 13 steps or PMM...

Im not sure if it was meant for a joke, but in one routine he suggests buying a monkey  and dressing it in a demon outfit    Now dont try to convince me that this effect has been road tested a good few times. A real live monkey for christs sake! .

Funnily enough I was reading this effect last night and couldn't believe what was being suggested. I know it was written sometime in the 80's and US laws regarding pet monkeys are laxer than ours.

13 Steps kicks Practical Mental Magic's ass. 13 Steps is Bruce Lee. Practical Mental Magic is Peters & Lee.

Obscure 70's reference to a once popular singing duo added for Lord Freddie's enjoyment.

I saw them in concert in 1976. And saw Lennie Peters on his solo tour.
And met him and got his autograph. And think their disco version of the Chaplin penned song 'Smile' is the best ever recorded.
God, I'd be so easy to do a cold reading on!

My biggest disappointment, I am sad to say, was Pure Effect by Derren Brown. I actually got very little out of it.

I read it a couple of times, but didn't really feel that I had learned a lot from it. Having said that, I did read it rather late in my initial learning so was already aware of some of the thinking put forward in the book.

While I am sure that many people will get a lot from the book, sadly I didn't.

Tricks of the Mind, however, I found incredibly interesting.

I've got to agree with a few of you guys here. RRTCM was lovely, Bobo was not. I just can't visualise (even with help from the drawings) what I'm meant to be doing. Truth is coin work doesn't really turn me on, perhaps the reasoning for my failings! Stupid fumbly hands. Wish I had big slender hands capable of amazing things1
