Have films like the Prestige, The Illusionist and Magicians brought magic back to the masses and raised the profile of magic again?

Or has it always been here in one way or another and I just haven't really noticed?

It seems that these films all came out around a similar time e.g not 10 years apart and captured a lot of peoples imaginations.

Or has Derren Brown achived this already?

not really, well not here in the states anyway. those were good movies tho.

I really want to see The Prestige though! It looks amazing...I'll get around to it one day.

They both reintorduce theatrical magic, which is a good thing since the masses only know magic because of TV personalities like David Baline and Criss Angel.

Certainly not true over here in the UK as I think that we have a more refined audience.

it's a fair bet that the first magician that many lay people think of over in the UK is Paul Daniels and then you have the likes of Tommy Cooper, David Nixon and Derren Brown to name but a few.

We may be a small Island but it appears that we're much more spoilt for choice

the prestige got me into magic and i started to look around for other magicians and books and what not. but it was penn n teller's "shadows" that made me start practicing some small card tricks. and when i finaly showed some to ppl. and got some cool reactions off these small tricks i started to really practice.
so yes, they have had a small influence. but the buffer zone of practice will always keep ppl from becoming magicians. but i think the movies made ppl realize how some magic is performed and more ppl are interested in how it works than actually performing it
