Mentalism

Postby Michael Kras » Jun 7th, '07, 15:13

Hello!

After a nightmare of a kids show, I have decided to permanently forget the midgets and go back to what I do best: Close up magic for adults. I also want to start getting into mentalism. Sounds like a great genre to get into, and I have honestly never really done it.

My adult shows are best, so I thought I should add a Mentalism show to my slection of shows for hire. Can anyone recommend any good mentalism sources?

I am thinking about purchasing Max Maven's Nothing DVDs, but am not sure if it is worth the money. Does anyone here own it? Is it a good buy? Just that DVD alone I am sure would answer all of my prayers if the hype is correct.

Are any of Sankey's mentalism DVDs good?

Any recommendations would be appreciated!

Check out Craig Browning's big-ass thread on it, and expect to be recommended the classics, which I understand to be Corinda, Banachek etc.

No idea, but I think it would be very, very good for you to branch out a little from the Sankey stuff.

It sounds like you're completely new to this, so I'd suggest Karl Fulves' Self-Working Mental Magic.

Thank you to both of you! Very useful information, and the Craig Browning thread is a great start. However, I am looking for a more modern mentalism approach such as the works of Max Maven and such. Anyone have anything else?

Thank you! By the way, does anyone own Nothing?

Yes, all the info you need about where to begin and what books to source is freely available on this site. It's a long journey though. A bit different from picking up a TT and going "a-ha! so that's how they do it!"

Also be prepared to listen to people like Craig Browning. He might be a of a know-it-all, but that's only because he...well..knows it all. I've learned as much from his posts (and those of the Rev. Mark Lewis) as I have from many, many expensive books. Open your mind and soak it all in my son.

Sankeys 22 blows to the head and Boris Hocus Pocus please dont focus, are ok.. there are some nice effects and some great ones and some meh!!

However, Sankey DVDs are the LAST thing you need.. Jay Junior

buy Corindas 13 steps to Mentalism and Ted Annemans practical mental magic.. and go through them.. slowly.. this will be years of work.. no quick fix here matey..

Them are the 2 fundamental sources on Mentalism ( Ive been told ) everything else is just supplementary reading.

So pick up these two, lock yourself away for a year and come back and enlighten us with what you have picked up

Slow down Michael, I know you're enthusiastic but you really need to learn the solid basics. They'll serve you so much better in the future.

Tomo's suggestion of Fulves is a good one, there are some brilliant ideas and techniques in there.

Is Mark Lewis really a reveran?? Or did he buy the title like you can buy the title Lord or Lady??

genuine quesion.. I just wonder whether he is truly a Godly man or he is metaphorically a reverand because of his almightily 'wise' posts

Agree with above, get Karl Fulves self working mental magic and it will give you a solid grounding. Effects like the blindfold deck etc, when presented properly, are fantastic

HAve to agree with the above posts. Get 13 steps and anneman. You will be dissapointed on first read. Most people new to mentalism are ( I was). Then read it again...probably still dissapointed...then again and you might get it.
If you are after a dvd, the osterlind series are always spoken highly of, though I dont own them (I'm more of a book worm). The max maven 'nothing' dvd has had mixed reviews, so you will have to read them yourself to figure out if it is for you.

Please please please dont do the cups and ball and then do a watch preditcion effect.

If you mix very classy magic and do some mentalism it may work but I am talking to the standard of Guy Hollingworth classy. Never mix the two though. Oh look card in my wallet and then do a demo of esp.

At the moment I am learning hypnotism and mixing a little bit of waking hypnosis and mentalism in to it. Actually I am enjoying the hypnotism so much I may give up magic to do that instead. I am not sure but its a lot of fun.

I am master of misdirection, look over there.

We are not falling out young Welshy, we are debating, I think farlsy is an idiot he thinks I am one. We are just talking about who is the bigger idiot.

Um, no offense, but are you aware that you yourself are a "kid"? Or perhaps you are like Merlin and instead of aging, you youthen. I would think that because you are closer in age to children than adults, it's easier for you to connect with children.

Just because you do Sankey so much, I would say stay away from any of his stuff.
