How Did You Start?

Postby Michael Kras » Jun 8th, '07, 02:09

Hello!

Just wondering: What was your inspiration to start magic? How old are you? Who influence you? What kind of magic did you start out performing?

I had tons of exposure to magic at a very young age. I saw Copperfield levitatie across the grand canyon, The Murray Hatfield Magic n Miracles tour show every year (I still do), and numerous kids shows. My neighbours bought me a little toy magician that had neat tricks built into him, like the palm of his hand was a coin tray, etc etc.

I found a magic shop in my hometown, and bought my first trick, "The Coin Bite". Ever since I saw Blaine do it on his first television special, I was hooked. I started levitating using the Balducci method at school and frightening other children

It always stuck with me, and ever since I was 7 years old, I have been serious about magic.

Let's hear your stories!

I used to love watching Paul Daniels as a kid and got bought my first Paul Daniels Magic Set for xmas when I was about 8. I get a few more books and card tricks.

I lost interest in magic at about 13 when I discovered more interesting things.

I got back into it again seriously about 2 years ago after doing a couple of stage shows as a magician's assistant.

In my younger years I had a few magic sets that I nearly always used to perform for my granny. I also had a svengali deck and a few other things that I'd collected from a magic shop at a seaside town we used to visit during the summer hols.

Recently I got back into magic on a dare- Last november I watched a DVD with my friends and jokingly said "pffft thats easy I could do that". So they set me a task that I had to perform a show for them on boxing day, which I did and was great banter.

I never made a conscious decision to be a hobbyist but I seemed to have been bitten by the bug.

I've tried many forms of magic but I keep coming back to my cards. Although I got a few books of card4magic and thimble magic seems to have tickled my fancy. Has anyone ever dabbled about in thimble magic before?

Can anybody please help me? I'm having terrible problems controlling my streetmagic- I can't walk down a street without turning into a pub.

I was bought a Paul Daniels magic set when I was about 8. Used it for about a week and got bored. Same with a svengali deck, aged 13. Then I bought Derren Brown's book, TOTM, loved the small coin trick in there and wanted to learn more. Found some crappy videos on youtube, and they weren't good enough, so I emailed a friend of mine from another forum who apparently is one of the best card flourishers and magicians in the world, and asked him how to get started. He recommended Royal Road (predictably) and I've never looked back. Joined here soon after that.

I also had a Paul Daniels set when I was about 6 but mustn't have played with it minimally because I have no relocation of being into it that much. I've always liked magic but never was mad into it like I am now.

So what got me interested? I went to a wedding in Prague and my girlfriends uncle is a magician and I said "Go on then show me a trick" and he did a coin vanish and reveal. Obviously I was amazed and it was bugging me how he did it so I thought why not learn and try it myself. I'm mainly interested in performing coin and card tricks but can imagine getting interested in other types of magic. So looked on YouTube which was ok-ish then joined here for advise and got RRTCM and MCM.

I'm so glad I did! I'm loving it so far and now I'm into Derren Brown.

3 cheers for the TM forum and it's members!!

Got quite ill recently nad couldn't do much just sit about the house and watch TV.
I saw a show called max magic and that got me interested...i had got a book on card tricks for christmas this year but never used (marvin's magic so mostly reorganised a deck of cards and silly things kids stuff really).
I then thought that I could amuse myself with the tricks while ill and it has just progressed to taking up alot of my free time.
It's fun tho.

Last year when I first started going to college, my mate showed me Twisting the Aces. I told him I wanted to learn so he bought me a Bicycle deck back from Florida and lent my his Card Miracles DVD. I then learnt some stuff from another friend in college, and I then bought Card Course online. That was when I joined here and was lead to Royal Road, which I have now ordered and hope to be recieving on Monday :D .

My uncle does magic, so that along with Paul Daniels and a marvins magic set got me started (can't remember the precise order of things). I stopped doing some time ago and recently got back into it. I think what got me back into it was the stripper deck. I got a really good one from a magic shop in orlando. Since then I've been gradually getting back.

Like many an English kid in the seventies, I loved Paul Daniels and bought loads of the tricks from his colour-coded range. I hardly read any books, didn't learn any sleights, just enjoyed knowing gimmicked tricks for my family. Predictably, I lost interest as I got into my teens.

Then a little over a year ago I was on my honeymoon in Manhattan and a street magician approached my wife and I. He did a couple of coin and cigarette tricks, was engaging and fun, and left us with a card for the magic shop he was promoting. My interest was piqued and a new obsession born.

for christmas when i was younger my grandma bought me a magic kit (just some realy cheesy little plastice gimmicks) and o ya it came with the hat and a sweeeet wand. anyways i had to live with her the next summer and she would always act interested in the little shows i did for her. then i would get a new magic trick every year till i was about 15 and she would always give me the confidence to keep doing it. grandmas are always great for everything.
