Type: Coin
Difficulty: 1
Performance time: 1-5 minutes
Examinable: No.
Reset Time: n.a

Comments:
Excellent trick. The trick is 50 times better if you ask for a spectators coin and hand it
back when you have done.

Overall Rating:
8/10

The only problem I have with this one is that the gimmick is now quite well known. A good trick though.

get hold of Michael Ammar's routine with this prop - should help you overcome issues such as these!?! He presents it as an illusion - 'see - this pencil appears to penetrate...' with a couple of ideas on a strong ending.

also suggest that the bigger the coin, the easier it is to handle, and to hide the gimmick... i think abrakazam does a £2.00 coin.

Cig thru coin

Postby bwalder » Apr 22nd, '03, 11:22

Another one where you really do get what you pay for. It is essential that the hole is hidden once the cig/pen is removed. Avoid the Euro ones at all costs for now!

cig thro coin

Postby nikwak » Apr 23rd, '03, 09:58

I have had this trick for quite a number of years and the only problem with it is the replacement of parts. (Trying to write this without giving anything away!!!) When I replaced the band, the inners kept falling away from the shell. I have tried many types of sticky stuff but nothing seems to work as well as it did when it was new! Anyone got any suggestions?

could try holding bands in place with some magicians wax?

I had this one for years too. Then I saw it exposed on TV. :(

I thought to myself, "My skillful switch and awesome presentation will defeat any 'trick coin' theories." However, even if they can't figure out how you switched the coin, they say, "I know how he does that -- it's a trick quarter!"

After throwing up, I stopped using it. I figured I would wait a few years for the show to "fade away" and people to forget all about it.

But... they keep playing that show over and over -- EVERY SEASON. If anyone doesn't know that trick yet, they don't have a TV.

Why would you want to perform it for anyone who owns a TV :?:

At least the bite-coin trick hasn't been exposed like that. This has satisfactorily taken cig-thru's place in my set list.

Always scared of sticking it in with something that will never let me get it back out again!!
Quite agree that it has been exposed and that is a great shame. However, I still come across people who have never seen it and can be quite mystified by it - especially if they are at a bar and had a couple!!!

Cig Thru Coin

Postby magicguy » Apr 23rd, '03, 19:16

The one I had was made by a company called "Johnson" (I think) and it had a metal spring soldered onto the back. The one I saw exposed on TV had some kind of rubber band on the back. I can't speak for that one.

I can say that the Johnson Cig Thru Quarter that I had was VERY NICE! The cigarette was seen to go into the quarter from the tail-side and the "work" was UNDETECTABLE even if you felt the quarter with your fnger. The other side can not be shown at anytime. :(

If you know a good coin switch or two, this is a MIND BLOWING illusion (if they don't already know the secret). Unless someone actually knows how a quarter can be rigged to do that, it looks just like magic. To "borrow" someone else's quarter and do it leaves them with no logical conclusion.

To pull this illusion off well, I think you MUST be able to switch the special coin for a normal one UNSEEN and UNSUSPECTED and most of the practicing I did on it was basically the handling of the switch. Once the switch is invisible, the rest is pretty easy.

David Copperfield performed it on TV on his "Walking Through the Wall of China" special. :)

I performed it almost daily for years and most people really freaked out. My Dad used to take me to the bars with him and I got a reputation for it and numerous requests. It has got to be one of the strongest close-up illusions that could be done until... Fox Television's horrible destruction of it.

The one I have is the version with the elastic band and it is the replacement of that which causes me all the aggro!
I agree, it was one of the best close-up illusions until it was 'uncovered' but there are still people out there who have no interest in magic - or so they think - until you ask them for a coin and then proceed to shove a cigarette through it!
I'll try magician's wax and see if that holds the gimmick.
Thanks to everyone for getting back to me on this - much appreciated.
