Can cats with Hiv tranmit to humans

Postby lindz » Jun 15th, '07, 18:50

I know this is a bit of a strange post but my cat has just been diagnosed with HIV and only has a few weeks to live and although the vet and a bit of googling have said they can't be transmitted from cat's to humans I just wondered if anyone knows any different. I'm just a bit worried because of the kids but the vet advised us to not put it down beause he is in no pain but we have to keep him inside because apparantly if he goes near another cat he can pass it on without touching it. So any advice would be much appreciated.

No it can't as it's apparently a different kind of HIV. A friend of mine had the sad news a few years ago that her cat had this & was told it's not the same as the human one but a 'cat version'.

I just did a quick search on Wikipedia and found this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feline_AIDS

I hope it helps. Sorry about your cat! :(

Sorry to hear that Lindz. We lost a cat last year that was barely 2. Its bad enough losing a cat you've had its entire life but when you lose a cat before its time its even more upsetting.

Sorry to hear that mate.

Reading the title of the thread I thought it must have been a Welshman writing it, oh no that's sheep isn't it...

Since we're swapping dead cat stories, I've got one. When I was two, my parents bought me a cat. I forget what kind he was, but since I was only two I named him "Pretty" . He was more of an outdoorsy cat and ran into the street alot. He got hit by a car not only one, not two, not three, but four separate occasions. After the fourth, he was finally put down, but until then he had several leg braces to help heal his broken bones. He was still able to get hit by cars, though. It was funny when he ran because the braces clinked together and it sounded like someone jingling change  . Anyway, I wasn't that attached to the cat because whenever I tried to pet him, he got very hissy. I was pretty upset when the vet told me that he had to put Pretty ( Oh God, I still can't believe I called him that  ) to sleep, but now I joke about it. Moral of the story, the death of the cat can be sad in the beginning, but it can give you a story! :D

Cheers for the kind comments guys. The thing now the missuss thinks it's all her thought saying things like if we hadn't moved here or if she never brought him and all that but I don't know what to say that except it's not her thought but she really is getting herself down more by doing this. I think I'm going to have to try to convince her that there is still a positive about all this, for instance the cat had a nice home and family to look after it but I just got to convince her this.
