I would say your best bet would be to buy some DVDs put out by James Brown, himself. He has a new product coming out called "The Workeroo" and he already has out "Still Fancy a Pot of Jam?". I'd say buy those and you should be set.

Thankyou very much that is very helpful, i think its something that i will purchase in the near future, but one thing that worries me.

How do you practice this kind of magic? Its not liek card magic where you can do it by yourself as much as you want. Surely you need someone else to be there too, to play the tricks on??

Hi Lemon

Of course you can buy the DVD released by James, and the Workeroo is a utility and not a DVD but is not yet available.

To be honest, if you're really as interested in learning as you say then read some of the sticky's in the introduction and other sections that are aimed at beginners as you will need to learn much much more.

Anyway, welcome to TM

You want to do magic like James Brown? To tell you the truth, it is good to have influences and someone that you can look up to and possibly model yourself upon. There is nothing wrong with that.

But, you have to remember, when you see Mr. Brown doing his thing, you are watching the culmination of years of work in front of a real audience and honest commitment to get to where he is now in performing the way that he does.

You can't buy it in a can and you can't be James Brown.

I suggest that you start where we all do - on the bottom, learning the basics and committing to years of work in order to attain that level of excellence. You'll find many, many, many threads that deal with where to start on these forums.

Mike.

Jack you don't know what your missing, still fancy a pot of jam sits proudly at the top of my favourite DVD list. Even if you only watched this DVD for tips on misdirection it would be a good buy.

Lemon, James Brown's work would probably be out of your reach at the minute, skill wise. You could try something like Karl Fulves self working card tricks or Royal Road to card magic. These books will get you up and running. :D

And Welcome to the boards

Can anybody please help me? I'm having terrible problems controlling my streetmagic- I can't walk down a street without turning into a pub.

Just watched the YouTube link three times now. It's sublime! Its good as all I want to do is practice, practice, practice!

"Still fancy a pot of jam?" Excuse my ignorance but I've never heard of it! Is it an instructional/tutorial video?

Lemon - I'd take Wills's advice. Royal Road to Card magic is well worth the investment! I started out about a month ago and its a very very cool book to own. Not sure on the Karl Fulves book, maybe I should check it out as well?!

Karl Fulves are self working tricks which can be nice to add to your routine as a starter to give you some confidence in performing. I recently got the self working mental magic. I'm not a mentalist but it is nice when preforming magic to say something like "I now wanna try something a little more experimental, hopefully with your help we can make it work".

It just adds a little more to my routine and I like some self workers as I can relax more with them and concentrate on the performance more.

Still fancy a pot of Jam is a DVD by James Brown which teaches various effects and tricks. I watched it and was blown away. If you can do the first few sections of RRTCM you might be able to adapt some of the tricks on this DVD. If you want a DVD of impromptu (mostly) strong magic, you'll not go far wrong with this

Self working mental magic eh?? Now that sounds like it could be rather interesting....off to Amazon.co.uk

I'll see if I can track down the DVD, I assume it's quite expensive? It's probably too advanced for me as I'm still learning to shuffle correctly at the moment. Still might give it a look though.

Would you recommend an online shop that would be worth getting it from?

All Karl Fulves books are well worth getting, you can usually pick them up for next to nothing on the new and used section on Amazon.

I've got a lot of these books and often used ideas from them.

I'd maybe give Still Fancy a Pot of Jam a miss for the mean time, as you won't really be able to perform that much of it at the minute. Unless of course you just wish to buy it and watch in awe.

Your best bet would be the self working range by Karl Fulves. These books are great for learning tricks that you will be able to perform fairly quickly. Compared to DVD's these books are a steal for value and content.

I got the mental magic as I know the road to mentalism is long and hard. I'd rather just get a few self workers of it and put in a good performance using them during my card routine.
