Do You remember February 1993 when a young boy of 3 was taken from a Liverpool shopping centre by two 10-year-old boys? Jamie Bulger walked away from his mother for only a second, Jon Venables took his hand and led him out of the mall with his friend Robert Thompson.

They took Jamie on a walk for over 2 and a half miles, along the way stopping every now and again to torture the poor little boy who was crying constantly for his mummy.

Finally they stopped at a railway track where they brutally kicked him, threw stones at him, rubbed paint in his eyes, pushed batteries up his anus and cut his fingers off with scissors. Other mutilations were inflicted but not reported in the press. What these two boys did was so horrendous that Jamie's mother was forbidden to identify his body.

They then left his beaten small body on railway tracks so a train could run him over to hide the mess they had created. These two boys, even being boys, understood what they did was wrong, hence trying to make it look like an accident.

This week Lady Justice Butler-Sloss has awarded the two boys anonymity for the rest of their lives when they leave custody with new identities.
They will also leave custody early only serving just over half of their sentence. They are being relocated to Australia to live out the rest of their lives. They disgustingly and violently took Jamie's life away and in return they each get a new life!
Please, If you feel as strongly as we do, that this is a grave miscarriage of justice.

"They then placed batteries in his mouth (false reports that the batteries were placed in his rectum were spread by a chain letter which also stated that Bulgers fingers were cut off using scissors, this again untrue.) " Wikipedia

It's still a horrible thing, but chain letters like this don't go anywhere. On myspace, I saw the same story with a totally diffrent set of names. The names were from my peers. Lists like that don't work because they break off at many points.

Firstly read this...

http://www.breakthechain.org/exclusives/bulger.html

Secondly...

Perhaps sometimes we have to think more about things before jumping on the public moral panic/outrage band wagon. It may be controversial to even think that these kids deserved nothing more than stringing up, but it depends on what you think the criminal justice system is designed to do...punish or rehabilitate.

And that australia thing is complete rubbish.

Please, If you feel as strongly as we do, that this is a grave miscarriage of justice.

This does rather seem to suggest that you don't have much time for the idea of redemption. It also begs a rather difficult question: is it really a "grave miscarriage of justice" or a missed opportunity to commit an equally disgusting and violent double murder?

We have been studying this story in Religious Studies.

It was apparently brought on by the two youths playing violent video games too much, so the mother of the murdered child was planning to sue the company that made the video game.

What all of the information failed to mention, was the fact that, instead of the child walking away from the mother, it was the reverse, she walked away from him, and left the child outside a shop, while she went inside to do some shoplifting.

I know it's an awful thing to say, but talk about poetic justice.

All the best,

What I'm about to say will undoubtedly ring as unpopular with many... that is, unless they actually pause to digest what's being said and the facts around it.

Our society have become exceptionally melodramatic when it comes to all sorts of hard luck and ugly scenarios such as this situation may seem. I can assure you, there are much uglier things happening in our world that you will NEVER hear about. But when it comes to the whole sex related crimes issues and most especially when it involved kids, I believe society has robbed them of their innocence and the "moralists" are trying to redefine nature.

Kids play doctor... it's a fact! Kids have NATURAL curiosities that start as young as 3 and 4 which naturally leads to experimentation in the majority of instances. As one gent pointed out to me, this also includes the "kids" making advances on adults and not the other way around (which the courts nor society ever want to consider... after all, the grown-up should know better... tell that to every 20+ year old male that's had the exceptionally cute and young making very direct advances... even forceful advances... and yes, females can rape males we just don't hear about it. Just as we do not want to hear about kids "raping" grown up... yet, it happens.)

I can forgive a child on many levels for such things so long as they get the help and are encouraged to shift their direction and then, placed into a more rounded and healthy environment that sustains said efforts. But, to toss him straight back into the lion's den isn't wise, nor smart and thus, you might as well leave the kids in prison for the sake of public safety.

I get rather fed up with this attitude that everyone labeled with a Sex Crimes brand however, must be shunned and seen as a social outcast for life. Such is not progressive social consciousness but very middle ages oppressive thinking... we're just not setting them in stocks in the town square or tattooing them or forcing them to wear some silly scarlet letter around their neck... we may as well :?

This practice gets me even more bent when members of society think that kids that do things kids naturally do, such as skinny dipping in a local pond or stream or simply being boys and de-panting a chum... get labeled with such stigma for life. The so called "grown ups" ignoring or forgetting (conveniently) the antics of their own childhood and that of their parents before them, etc.

It really is time for folks to just grow up when it comes to this kind of thing and our pettiness around it all. The ONLY THING that leads us to viewing the majority of these antics as being "immoral" and "wrong" is that cursed black book certain cults have used as a suppository over the past 2,000 years. Prior to the birth of that hypocrisy humankind had a far healthier look at the body, sex, sexuality and the idea of what genuine sexual transgressions were vs. the petty-crap we whine about so much in today's world.

NEWS FLASH... less than three generations ago it was NORMAL for a 14 or 15 year old girl to be married off to a 30 or 40 year old man. This is still common in some parts of the world and was seen as being normal, moral and a way of life. Same happened to young men with older women; it is how family lines and fortunes were allowed to grow and carry on as they did. It was likewise normal, well into the mid-1960s, for most young girls to be married with kids prior to turning 23 years old... to be 19 and not engaged yet was seen as an insult... that something was wrong with you and you were an "Old Maid"...

Y'all really should look at how society really was and how YOU have been robbed of your own innocence and youth because of the exaggerated myths of morality imposed onto your lives by uneducated idiots that wanted to keep you as a pet vs. allowing you to grow the way human beings were intended to grow and mature.

Just a thought

When I first heard this spoken about, I thought it was complete and utter rubbish, and there was was more to it than that. But after studying psychology and criminology, and coming accross such studies as Bandura's Bobo doll experiment, it does make you think. Take away the influence of a parent, and stick a child in front of a tv all day, then where else is the child going to learn his morals from.

One thing that really gets my back up is these people who turn up outside the court during these types of case, and vent there outrage. Its like they need to be seen to be outraged. What kind of example are they themselves setting for their kids?

but with that experiment, there was very little ecological validity - what are the odds that you watch a video with someone beating the $hit out of a bobo doll, only to be placed in a room with a bobo doll only moments later?

it is very unlikely that the kids played a video game in which you killed a kid in all thos eways, then decided to have "a laugh" and do it themselves...

well, that's my opinion

but then again, the mind is a many layered thing - kinda like an onion :D

Andy, I do believe you're overlooking the most crucial part of your comment.

TAKE AWAY THE INFLUENCE OF A PARENT

And that's where a major factor of the problem comes from. My problem is that people are thrusting the responsibility away from where it should be. It is not the responsibility of the video game producer to prevent children from playing the games.

Look at things like the MPAA - institutions created, in theory, to help provide parents with knowledge of content. Beyond just a common sense issue (ie - if you're "cloudy" on whether or not a young child should watch Saw or play Manhunt - you aren't ready to raise small children), these regulations have been put in place, and yet we're still supposed to blame everyone BUT the parent.

It should also be noted that portions of the Bobo doll experiment didn't lead up to that. It was noted that even when exposed to -non-agressive behavior, children acted aggressively. That segment of the experiment (and Bandura's prediction of the opposite reaction) made the results inconclusive.

A possible interesting footnote to the Bobo Doll Experiment would be the followup 1963 experiment, where it was concluded that exposure of the aggression via video playback was less influential on the subjects than the aggression seen in person. I find that to be an interesting and critical point.

Crozboz - the term "poetic justice" is really not the case, here. Walking away from your child for a moment is, indeed, a stupid mistake. However, that mistake hardly makes what happened justified. It's also not a matter of "serves her right". If she neglected her child, sure - then she could possibly share in the blame. But, if it's just a case of turning her attention for a few moments, you can't really put it on her. Like many, this is just another comment that pushes responsibility away from where it should be.

Craig - while I do see the points you are making, and that MANY of the so-called molestation and sexual assault claims are either completely false or horribly misrepresented - there are people who have commited the crimes they're charged of, and are indeed a threat. Like you, I also feel that more effort should be placed on the preliminary aspects. Far too many lives are destroyed as a result of false allegations. Case in point - the Duke Lacrosse team. It is clear that these guys didn't commit the crimes that they were accused of. They've even been exonerated in the media. However, they will always have that stigma. Even with a mountain of evidence, sadly - the "what if" factor will always loom over them. Whereas, if we (and I mostly point this finger at my own country) weren't such a nation of busybodies, the entire situation could have been handled completely out of the public eye.

I do agree that we shouldn't be so quick to place those scarlet letters. But, I also believe that some people deserve them.

I think it goes beyond a religious argument (as I'm sure you do as well). Religion is the easy, and most readily identifiable target. But the government is just as big a problem. You can't put it all on the black book, sir. Not anymore. Interest groups and political agendas are fast becoming the immediate dangers.

As far as "kids being kids", Craig - that's all well and good. You have a point here, but this situation can hardly be chalked up to the natural inquisitiveness of youth. I see what you're saying, but this doesn't fit the current topic. There's quite a bit more I'd like to say to you Craig (none of it bad), but I will reserve those comments for a private conversation, if you're interested.

Tomo - the idea of redemption should always be the intended outcome. As good and decent people, we should allow for this. However, I hold to the notion that some people are beyond redemption. As I don't know enough of this particular story, I couldn't say whether these two have truly "seen the light" or not. If they have, then yes - they should be able to move on. I don't think relocation is out of the question, either. If the threats on their lives are true - they should be given the opportunity to move on (something that will help in their rejoining of society). I'm not sure that Mikey feels they should remain where they are and wait for the mob to come and claim them, or if he just feels that they haven't fully paid their debt.

I'm glad we don't have the death penalty in this country you might disagree with me but I think its wrong to take a life because someone took someone elses, I think they should still pay and thats what prison is for but who's to say that someone can't feel remorse for their crimes after or even later? take for example the Bulger killers they were 10 at the time and we've all done things we've regretted when we were younger although nothing so extreme as murder. As for the papers their job is to sell newspapers and they do it by embellishing and exaggerating stories to create sensationalism.

It even says in the bible (I use this word as a last resort, as noone really likes to use false evidence in an argument) that

"if someone slaps you on your right cheek, turn and offer him your left"

Right, so therefore, if someone kills someone, let them loose and let them kill more people. Yet another piece of evidence wherein the bible disagrees with modern conformities.

Boys will be boys...

At ten years old, the idea of taking a 2 year old, torchering, mutilating and ultimately killing him then placing him on train tracks to hide the evidence never crossed my mind. In fact, that they had the presence of mind to attempt hiding their mess proves that they knew, beyond any doubt, that what they did was wrong.

Regardless of vids or movies or TV or anything else, they knew what they did was wrong. The whole thing was premeditated.

There is something fundamentally missing in these monstrosities of nature.

I know, killing someone else doesn't make much sense as a deterent. But, I'll tell you this, if you put these two sick animals to death (which is what society should do with sick animals), they will never torture and kill another human being, ever again.

There is something seriously lacking in these sick animals. As is being stated, one of them is already breaking his probation. Do we need to see more inocents killed before we decide what the proper course of action is? If you don't want to put these sick animals out of their misery, then the least you can do is put them in a cell and feed and water them until they die of natural causes. How many inocents must die first?

Far as I'm concerned, give them to the angry mob.

Mike.

The abduction was premeditated but the murder was not, I think they killed him to avoid getting into trouble for pinching him although murder is a far greater crime than abduction.

While that may be true, Misanthropy, it doesn't change the fact that attempted to cover it up. It's still premeditated.

Edit - As the report says that the child was dead before the train hit him, they really did that to cover up the fact that they killed him, not just abducted him. Given the severity of his wounds and what they did - I just don't believe they only meant to kidnap him.
