Magic store

Postby gravytrain » Jun 24th, '07, 01:52

Hey Guys,

I've been using Penguinmagic for magic for 2 months or so, and recently i've decided that its not really a great site. What does TalkMagic use to buy their magic-gear? I've tried lurking google, but with a topic like "magic store" you get so many c*** (not the best) results...

thanks in advance,
GT

why do you say Ellusionist sucks?
from what I've seen it seems like a pretty expansive and professional site.

gravytrain, sit down and have a cigar.

(If anyone catches that allusion, I'll be absolutely amazed...)

First, how long have you been into magic? Next, how old are you? Next, how much money do you have to throw away? Next, which magic books, if any, do you have? Next, what is your preferred genre (close up, "street," platform etc.)?

Do you have a lovely assistant? What's her name?

Sorry...

Anyway, tell us a bit about yourself and what you're looking for and what you are hoping to find and maybe we can help you out.

Mike.

Michael Jay makes some valid points here... if you are looking for a "reputable" source for quality magic you could just go to OWENS pay 35% more simply for the name... granted, they do make fine quality props which is why they are one of the main 5 resources used by theme parks and top end performers in the world. But as has been asked, "What kind of budget do you work from?"

$150.00 for a decent Zombie now days seems the norm... the Owen version is about three times that... it's beautiful and has a small handful of advantages over the more commercial versions, but does your ego require that name brand to be tied to your material?

The other thing centers on the kind of magic you are planning on doing, the kind of venues you wish to perform in, etc. I happen to represent several builders/designers that produce only a limited quantity of any one effect they release. These are each one-of-a-kind type devices in most instances or in some cases, books/manuscripts not intended for general consumption. The short of it being that you only gain access to this sort of material via recommendation and invitation... after you've proven yourself within that field (in this case, we are talking about Mentalism and Bizarre styled work but I've done similar broker work with major illusions as well).

Magic is a very, very wide field with dozens of variables. I congratulate you in waking up to the fact that companies like Penguin and Ellusionist hurt magic more than help and too, their only reason to exist is to take your money... I'd love to list a list of names here that are all MONEY GRABBERS who offer some clever wordage on old ideas and take a steady flow of $20.00 bills from the newbies... sadly, such finger pointing is "politically incorrect" in today's world. But if you keep your eyes & ears open just a bit, you'll catch on.

When it comes to my general needs for magic stuff I'd have to say that most of my buying is done with Stevens Magic Emporium in that I've NEVER had a problem with them in nearly two decades of doing business with them. I can't say that about many other companies, especially those that have a name but are under new (inexperienced) ownership, like Tannens.

Bottom line is, you need to "listen" but you also need to refine what it is your needs tend to be... what your goals are as a performer or collector, etc. so you can fine tune your search for the dealer(s) that would best meet your needs. Just like everything else out there, what works for me may not be right for you, so a bit of footwork is required.

Alright, I kinda jumped into that:
First thing : Micheal Jay, Your allusion is to Pink Floyd :D

Second: I'm way more interested in close-up magic / card magic more than anything. I just graduated so I have alot of money from graduation presents, and I've been doing card and coin magic since mid high-school, but nothing out of my comfort zone (8 or 9 tricks or so), but with this time i've gotten pretty good with sleights and things like that. Long story short, I'm looking to buy card tricks and close up

Do you have "Royal Road to Card Magic" (Hugard & Braue)? If not, you definitely need a copy of that.

As I said, I need to know what books you have...

Well, you have my attention!

And, actually, realizing that Penguin just ain't the answer in only 2 months shows a good aptitude on your part. How long have you been into magic? I think we need to address this, also, but judging from your post, I'm guessing 4 years.

Take a look at this thread for further information into what you just might be in search of...You see, magic is just as much about the journey to find yourself as it is about doing the tricks themselves to your wonderfilled audience. To this end, I will always suggest books.

Of course, I cannot walk away from this thread without plugging my own work, so if you're of a mind to really study coin magic, I would suggest giving this a look.

Mike.

4 Years is about right, but I havent improved over those 4 years, just impressed new friends and the ladies with simple sleight tricks and color changes. Thats what I'm interested in, coins and cards, no special props or big productions.
I also know a few hard card flourishes i've learned form just being around cards...

Thanks for the coin magic! I havent done much with it, but I'm just as interested in it!!! Looks like good work to me

Thanks,
GT
