Info - Professor Hoffmann's 'More' and 'Later' Magic

Postby fudgeukraine » Apr 5th, '07, 03:59

I was recently cleaning up my house when I found the following books:

"More Magic" by Professor Hoffmann, light tan cover, unfortunately the
copyright page is missing but this edition was published by 'David McKay
Publishers'

"Later Magic" by Professor Hoffmann, Dark brown cover, copyright states 1911.

I thought I'd come on here to see if anyone can give me some info about the magician and these books. I've tried an internet search but I can't really find that much info. I'd be greatful for any info anyone here can give me.

Another thing is does anyone have any idea of the worth of these books? I've got no real use for them and I'm a poor student so could do with the money whilst they go to someone who'd appreciate them a lot more!

Any info is appreciated!

Both books are classics but you'd need to check the magic bookstores to see what sort of value could be placed on them. Both works and many others are available as downloads although collectors might want to have the 'real thing' such as your older editions. TM doesn't permit the trade of books for various reasons so if anyone's interested they'd need to contact you by PM. Incidentally, Professor Hoffman's real name was Angelo Lewis but a bit of Googling should direct you to lots of sites with more information about him. http://www.taurusmagic.net/usedmagic3.html shows a couple of the books on sale at over £60 each.

Prof Hoffman wrote (and edited) a lot of books around 1910, and sadly for you they aren't particulary rare.

Some of the titles include
Modern Magic: A Practical Treatise On The Art Of Conjuring
Later Magic With New Miscellaneous Tricks And Recollections Of Hartz The Wizard
Tricks with Cards
Hoyle's Games Modernized - with Diagrams
More Magic
Later magic

More Magic - is available new at the moment as well. I think it was republished in 2006.

The site I usually use to get a rough idea of rare/2nd books is down at the moment but I would say that, dpending on condition and what edition they are (I am assuming not first) then they are probably worth around £20 each to a collector.

Do you know when they were piblished?

The 'More Magic' unfortunately has it's copyright page missing but I think it's possbly a first edition, or at least one of the first reprints as it is very aged and I would be very doubtful it's the 1976 reprint so might be an early edition.

The 'Later Magic' is again very aged, On the copyright page, it states:

"copyright 1904, published febuary 1904"
"Copyright, 1911, By E.P Dutton & Company"

So presuming it's not first edition but a 1911 reprint.

If in Good condition then the 1911 US edition of Later Magic is worth around £40. Is that what you are asking? Does it mention "Miscellaneous Tricks and Recollections of Hartz the Wizard" anywhere?

Without knowing the publisher or date of "More Magic" I can't give you an idea of price. This has been reprinted throughout the 20th century.
