Exalt the mature Audience

Postby greedoniz » Jun 25th, '07, 10:21

Generally when I have performed in any capacity it has almost completely been to a age range of 18 - 30 with my regular gigs being in loud club type enviroments.
Lately though I have had the opportunity to perform for a slightly more mature audience (40+) at the odd wedding or pub and have to say the reaction difference you get is quite pleasantly startling.
With your younger audience you tend to get the odd loud mouth and at the point of reveal you get a equally loud reaction but with the older age group you get a quiet concentration followed by lesser reaction that seems more appreciative.
On the whole I love the fact that an older audience seems to have a greater appreciation of the whole act and the allowance for you to do your thing without them trying to out do you.
For a younger generation brought up on the Blaine style audience freak out then maybe try this approach to magic as I personally find it far more rewarding.

The 40+ generation still appreciate variety acts and the style of magic that came with it.

What do you mean by STILL? As far as I'm concenred we ALWAYS have

On a serious note. A younger audience seem to be out for thrills whereas an older, and generally more refined audience want to be entertained and appreciate it more when they are.

In my experience you are also far more likely to get referrals and repeat bookings

It's not really an optical illusion - it just looks like one!
