Cups and Balls

Postby HenryHoudini » Jul 1st, '07, 22:45

I really want a good set of cups and balls, that looks nice. Right now the only set I've ever used was a cheesy one that came in a little magic kit. (I buy them okay! Theyre fun to play around with!)
I love watching people do cups and balls, and think its brilliant. I want one that has nice cups, and those purty crocheted balls. Reviews would be helpful

thanks

Indian Cups and Balls

Postby Amanda Angeli » Jul 1st, '07, 23:08

Hello Henry,

I love the Cups and Balls too. Especially the Indian Cups and Balls. My set is an antique wooden set that's ancient. It is beautiful in a rugged sort of way. Personally, for the balls, I prefer rocks since I tend to do my work outdoors.

The Indian style Cups and Balls is different from most cups and balls in that first of all it is typically done outdoors, on the ground, and also, the cups are different. In most cups and balls there is no stem like a wine glass, instead, it is simply a cup without a handle that tends to be larger at the open end.

In the Indian cups and balls, there is a stem and a slight base which has a distinct purpose in the way the style is done. It creates a much more flowing or dancing type style which fits my feminine tai chi type of surfing movements.

Combining that with the outdoors aspect and it gives the act a unique angle. Oh, and outdoors, the act is done seated on the ground. Grass or sand (personally, I love the sand - where better to practice this routine that at the beach in Kauai, by the way) is wonderful, for it helps create even bigger mysteries and magic.

Naturally, everyone has their own style and if a person were into style and class, then sitting in the dirt with some wooden cups might not fit them. But for me, being the surfing girl that I am, they fit my bikini style perfectly.

I wish you the best of enjoyment with this ancient and classic trick. The fun thing about it is that the only limitations are what you bring to the show.

Good luck and have fun.

Love,

Amanda Angeli

Check out www.cards4magic.co.uk as they have a superb range of cups and balls. Never overlook the cheapo plastic magic sets, very often the ideas in there are worth using and adapting and, even if the props are rubbish, you get the secret and some basic instructions included for a very low price  .

Theres a very nice page here that shows many different styles.

I think the wooden ones are quite nice, but I have tio admit I also quite like Amanda's Indian style cups. They aren't something I had taken much notice of before. I am intrigued now as to what the routine is with them and "How" the bases fit in to it all.

If you look at the first link I posted - check out "Terry Holley's Crystal Set of Cups"

Hello Mandrake,

Oh yes oh yes, I so fully agree, Mandrake. All magic tricks and sets have some value and wonderful lessons for us if we but allow ourselves to learn. And that is the truly thrilling thing is when we buy anything no matter the price, we never know where it will lead us.

Hello Bananafish,

Oh yes, the Indians are a truly wonderful, and interestingly overlooked path of the Cups and Balls. Few do them today, very little is written about them, and finding the routine is moderately challenging but certainly able to be done. As for how it works and what those wonderful stems are for, well, I'd so love to tell you but we are in a publice section here. And as for the routine itself, oh how I long to show it to you. Mine is, well, similar in creativity to some of the acts that I have talked about in other places on this board. You know me, I so love making things mine to fit my style. We all should do that no matter the trick we are doing. For that is where art blossoms. Of course, on the other hand, a lot can be said for doing the Classics always striving for perfect presentation, thus, magic is a paradox and it is up to each of us to walk that line of the 'tween.

Love,

Amanda Angeli

Yes Wayne, I have a suggestion...

Please don't post links which are pointed to sites rich in pay-per-click advertising. Especially on your first post here. Didn't you read the forum rules?

And please remove the link in your signature, as it contains little or no relevancy here, and ALSO contains pay-per-click advertising—which I would be prepared to bet real cashmoney that those pay-per-clicks go straight into your own pocket.

Many thanks.

Well, i am not sure about the pay per clicks on the site that I poseted as it was in direct reference to the indian cups and ball routine mentioned earlier. As for the signature of my own site I do apologize, my goal here wasn't self promotion but to talk magic, and directly about the cups and balls. Like I mentioned that you edited, I was hoping for some feedback on a high quality cup. I am thinking in the price range of $100.
I hope this post is within the guidelines of the forum, because you are correct in your assumption that I did not and still have not read the rules.
Thanks Wayne

did you think that was a good idea
when someone tells you that you messed up doing something, because you havent done something else first, before you do it again, do the something else. Its common sense
