I bust my screen

Postby I.D » Jun 29th, '07, 16:48

My monitor has been on the blink now at home for a couple of weeks.. it just cut out and now no power goes to it it seems.. no lights nothing, but the pc itself sounds to be starting up fine.

Ive tried changing the fuse and nothing, ive cleaned the dust off the fan to no avail..

does anyone know what may likely be wrong? and hopw much it may costs to get someone to look at it? or how I could fix it myself?

( and no.. this time it cant be blamed on looking at dodgy sites
though accidentally setting off an entire pad of flash paper right in front of it 2 days before may have a vague connection to it, I couldnt be sure )

Turn off the PC, and try removing the VGA cable or connector from the computer and monitor, and re-connecting.

Without a signal from the computer, the monitor may not function, so a dry connection may be the cause.

Usually, if something is knakered, it dies, and won't come back.

The fact this is intermittent implies it *may* be salvageable!

Monitors don't have fans.

1. Is it LCD or CRT?
2. Is it powered independently or powered from the PC power supply?
3. Have you tried switching the PC cable with the monitor cable?
4. Do no lights come on at all, like not even a standby light?
5. Does the PC beep when it starts up?
6. It's probably knackered anyway, and they're dangerous to tamper with if you're not qualified to do so. You can't go diving into them like a PC.

Ohhhh yes they do!

Two of our screens here have fans: a 24" Lacie CRT, and our 22" widescreen LCD both have fans, as they both contain internal PSUs.

:o In all my years, I've never seen that before. And I'm an ICT Tech.
Mind you, I've never opened one up. If it's bust, some other engineer fixes it.

Well, when I worked in a retouching studio, we had really expensive colour calibrated monitors, 9 of them, in a really hot room.

They were HUGE... and the fans on those puppies kicked out VERY hot air. On a winter's day, for example, there was no need for heating in there.

And... just talking to our resident IT dude, LCD screens with fans last a LOT longer... so when choosing a pro-display, go for a fan ;)

Our LCDs actually rival CRT now for graphic work.

Our Iliyama 22" (well, 21.xx") LCDs are fantastic. But then again, they did cost about £900 each... which is outragously dear, but for photography/graphics work, they are essential.

It does have a fan.. quite a big one.

Anywho.. all cables are connected properly. Ive done the tedious task of taking them out and blowing in them with all my might and reconnecting them ( why people always assumes that will work is beyond me )

The pc and monitor have been switched off and on about 40 times in the last two weeks.

Fuses changed.

Strangely enough, the monitor conked out once before for about a week and just decided to work again. Its about 4 years old.

Erm.. Its LCD

I havent actually tried switching the monitor cable with the pc cable. That might answer some questions. The monitor is powered independantly.

Is there no way you can either try the monitor on another PC, or try another monitor on the PC in question?
It would make things a lot easier for you.

yeh ill just go borrow a monitor off my mate

Just kidding.. I was meant to try that, but the nearest person i know is 45 miles away.. my dad.. and i forgot to bring the monitor up last time I went down. hes in greece now.

Im gonna pay £35 for someone to come tomorrow and diagnose the issue.. unless i can find someone who can look at it for cheaper.

I switched the pc and monitor cable round. same problem.

the monitor -- it has a lead.. which has a plug at one end and connects to the power box which then leads onto the monitor. >> the power box has a little light which is not lighting up... maybe thats the issue??

maybe the fuse has gone? that's what happened with me a while ago...i ended up taking the laptop apart to realise there was nothing wrong! and then sorted the fuse, and it worked...

...it is always obvious in the end...

The asnwer is more than obvious, I fear.

Your monitor has been used to view the PayPal site so often that I'd guess your missues has deliberately spilled water down the back of it

In all seriousness though, it does actually sound like it's well and truly deaded - sorry bud
