Asher's Twist

Postby Jing » Mar 11th, '04, 20:57

I've heard of this move and yet i have no idea what it is...

a) Can you give a quick explanation of effect and what tricks it might be used within?
b) Is it worth learning or are there moves which do the same thing, but easier?
c) How difficult is it to learn?
d) What texts/dvds are avaliable to help me learn it?

Thanks,

Answers:

1. The Asher Twist is basically a method of turning cards over unnoticed. It's not for the beginner, really, as it's quite a deft and dextrous move.

2. Yes, it's worth learning, as it works with ungaffed cards. You can perform 'twisting the aces' type effects with ease. There ARE easier moves, involving counts and gaffs, but with practice, this is quite pure.

3. Very head to learn, but worth the effort. You need to be dextrous, confident, and deft.

4. Buy 'Well Done' the video by Lee Asher. It has this and MUCH more.

Thumbs up!

I agree - looks like trick photography, it's so incredible.
Has anyone here mastered the move?
How difficult is it?

1. Yes it LOOKS like trick photography, but this is actually how it looks in performance

2. Yes, I've got it down quite well, although NOT as well as Lee himself - takes about a month to get it smooth, then, as usual, you will spend a lifetime trying to make it look like Asher makes it look. Don't waste your time - learn it, practice it, and it will STILL floor people - it even fools other Magi

3. It is very difficult, and takes a while to learn. The main thing is to learn how to hold the cards and where... after that, it all falls into place.

It's very good. I may even do a review of the 'Well Done' video soon, as I've not watched it for eons.

What a great move!!

It is one of those things you toy with when thinking of something newto do and think I would never get away with that. Until you see someone do it flawlessly.

Oh, and another thing to mention about this 'demo' video... the move looks just like it, but I do believe they may have 'blanked out' the sound a tad... which brings us back to the 'card chatter' thread of yesteryear...

I did wonder about that as I do get a nasty scraping/scuff sound. Unfortunately I can't stop my index finger telegraphing the move

I personally think the chattering is unavoidable. Although, it's quite an honest noise in many situations.

I have, over the course of the years, learned to be quite noisy with the cards anyway, by means of riffles, deals and counts.
I believe this conditions the audience slightly to the sounds, and when a sound is generated in moves such as Asher's Twist, or indeed, a simple slip-cut, then it's not so out of place.

After all, how many of you have heard it said of a riffle shuffle that it has 'a lovely sound'!?!?

The Asher move is worth the practice, though... but I believe the sound is an unavoidable byproduct. But, as I say, you can 'mute' it by conditioning the speccy slightly.

What, supplying them with a pair of earplugs?

LOL

Yeah, that would do it. Or by performing the trick in a vacuum... that's apparently quite reliable, and proven by that famous Russian astronaught/cardician - 'Edski Marlovski'.

(in Space, no one can hear your card chatter.)

Yeah, but I'd like to see them try a card on ceiling!
