Chris Angel - Coin Into Soda Can

Postby Magical_Trevor » Jul 2nd, '07, 15:48

I have searched the forum for any posts like this, however, have not found any - appologies if this is repeating a thread - also, I am not meaning to break any rules in this thread - I am just asking for a better way of handlng the routine which looks less awkward :)

I have just purchased the 'Chris Angel, Coin into soda can' routine and think its amazing. However, (I know this sounds crazy - but it might make more sense if you have the trick / routine) once you know how the illusion is done, the method / patter looks really awkward.

I was just wondering, even though the suggested handling looks amazing the first time you see the trick - and the audience never seem to suspect ANYTHING, do people have any handling tips regarding this trick?

Mainly handling the can / coin before the final revelation tips would be greatly appreciated

Thanks in advance

If you have the DVD it covers everything, in my opinion.

Bear in mind you'll only ever show this trick once to the same person, so just think back to the first time you saw it. Did you think anything looked 'awkward'?

Just remember the old saying, 'if it aint broke don't fix it'

Welcome to the world of magic. Performance is everything, gimmicks and sleights are something.

I disagree that it looks awkward. I actually adhere to Criss Angel's presentation more than Wayne's. Wayne adds some flourishy moves that I feel are unusual. People don't normally handle a can the way he does. Criss' handling is very natural and open.

I also disagree with Carlos - since I've started using this, I am constantly asked by friends at parties to show them again, or to show others. I'd say a few people close to me have seen me do it 10-15 times - and none of them have figured it out, yet.

Granted, I wouldn't advise you to show it multiple times - and these occasions weren't one night after another or anything like that, but you CAN show the effect more than once if you really wanted to.

I think you're suffering from magician's guilt, sir. As long as your handling is up to par, the moves are invisible. You might think it's awkward - but you should be the only one thinking that.

If you're looking for ways to raise your comfort level, do as Criss says on the video. Pick up a can of soda and just hold it and pass it from hand to hand. See how you do it without doing the work - and you'll come up with ways to put that into your handling.

looking at it on a video, even recorded on my phone, the can handling does look normal...its just me being paranoid that everyone else knows how its done :P

I think i always kinda knew that it did look flawless, just needed to know how others who have the trick thought

Cheers again

I think the secret almost seems obvious to the magician because the method is so simple. I'm sure a lot of people when buying the trick kicked themselves and thought 'why didn't I think of that?' Thats what made me worried about performing it, thinking that spectators would just think logically. But us magicians who bought the trick were unsure of the method, and we are normally most likley to work a trick out.

I disagree with people saying the trick is realy simple. Sure, it is simple to pull it off but I think it has taken me about 5 months before I am comfortable with the trick.

The method is very simple but it does take work to get the handling looking smooth. I've tried out a couple of different handlings for this but always end up going back to Houchin's way of doing it.

I perform this trick a lot. It never fails to get a good reaction. I generally say very little patter ("coin's gone, can unmarked, can u hear that?"). You just need to watch the angle at the start, but other than that, you're clean. I suggest you perform this trick - a lot. Just get used to it and it will flow naturally.

I would say that I have the method almost fully sussedout, I get worried about the angles though - I often find myself looking down at the can as I move it round, showing all the sealed sides...

I guess it just nerves - I'm used to card tricks, and am always paranoid (as posted above) that people will simply say 'thats obvious...its done like this...'

LOADS of mirror style practice for the win :)
