Lost My Job

Postby Tony Hyams » Jul 5th, '07, 22:39

I was working for 3 T.G.I. Friday's stores. The company was owned by whitbread, but has just been sold to an American company. They have decided to get rid of magicians through out the company, So I'm out of a job. Because I was working for them 5 days a week, I don't have enough private gigs to keep me going!!!

Awww... I am truly sorry to hear that. I hope you can get a bunch of bookings! And you know what? I am officially boycotting T.G.I Fridays. I hated their food anyway :)

Feel better!

There is enough work out there, but you may have to be prepared to be a jack of all magical trades in the short term.

You need to get into the wedding reception business asap - good money and my top earner.

Get in touch with as many pubs & resaurants as you can asap. You may have to get in touch with a 100 before you get a regular booking, but a regular gig is a regular gig. Some chains allow the manager to take decisions such as hiring entertainment.

Kids parties. Yep I hate 'em, but they pay good money for an hour's work. Get twisting those balloons!

If you have the skills, you may like to consider working as a "reader". Plenty of work out there, particularly at psychic fairs. You can earn £200 a day at a very average psychic fair. There's also the work for one-to-one readings and psychic/medium shows at private clubs.

You should also contact as many agents as possible as soon as possible, but be aware that most agents have a load of magicians already of their books. You need to have an "angle". I either promote myself as a wedding reception specialist or as a psychic. Makes me stand out for your generic dove worrier.

If you're a member of Equity (and if you're not you should be) get in touch. They may be able to help if you find yourself really skint.

Lastly, and I don't mean to preach, but were you contracted? Working 5 nights a week for the same company who could drop you at any moment sounds quite risky. If you were working 5 nights a week you should have ideally had a contract which in turn would have given you certain rights such a notice of termination etc.

Apart from that, good luck. I hope you find the work to keep you going as s full time pro. I'm sure you will - after all, you're a magician - you can do the impossible! Chin up.

Really sorry to hear that Tony and I hope that they soon realise the error of their decision.

Having seen you work, I can tell everyone that you're a natural and you have the ability to keep some pretty large tables of both adults and children entertained. For someone with your talent I'm sure that you won't be out of work for long.

That does suck major Cajonies but I'm sure you'll find plenty of work. Keep your thoughts positive and go stick it to TGI
