I Propose A Test

Postby Mikey.666 » Jul 6th, '07, 11:21

Ok. The number of secret seeking t!ts I keep seeing is very annoying to me, and probably to a lot of other members here.

I propose some sort of test before people can sign up to this forum. A question maybe. Example "Who fooled Houdini?" or "Who is the Professor?"

This will increase the chance of eliminating secret seeking and annoying people, as they either don't know the answer, or can't be bothered with it.

I feel something like this, if it can be done, would be very, VERY good for the forum. :)

I think it'd be a shame to have an entry test, it'd put out quite a few beginners who come here and really do want to learn. I know it's anoying when people come here saying how do I do this or that, but the mods do a good job keeping this in check and to be honest I don't think it's a huge problem.

If there was a test I would never have got on here and found all the great people and recommended books I have purchased to get me into magic!

Would be a shame...

But I can also see where you are comming from! Who has asked for secrets anyway? I've never spotted a thread asking before...or is it in PMs?

In all fairness, a test would simply create even more work for our poor, beleaugured Mods

As it stands, they do a fantastic job (thanks guys!) at dealing with the spam/exposure/idiot posters - and usually do so very quickly.

Whilst it's annoying to see such posts apprearing, I really think the current system is the best for all concerned, and wouldn't want to see any kind of entry-test, which would restrict the serious beginner.

Maybe all it needs is a strapline in the confirmation email title such as: "TalkMagic - where we don't ask for secrets"

How about an initiation ceremony like the gangs in L.A have where new applicants have to take a 2 minute beating from other members? Ok I'll put that in my bad ideas drawer.......oooh c*** (not the best) it's full

To be honest I'm getting more annoyed with the constant complaining about the annoying exposure posts than with the posts themselves...

Let's just let it be. It's not worth the time and effort required to make it go away. It's a cost/benefit thing. I too would enjoy not having to read through such useless posts... but as it stands I read through those AS WELL AS those that complain about the useless posts... so that's double the amount of useless posts!

We have no control over new users or non-members, but we can surely come to an agreement amongst ourselves... let's just ignore the posts!

Amen Brother! It would also mean a far easier job for the Mods to edit/lock/delete/move or whatever.

There hasn't been truer words said for a while. If something is annoying you just ignore it and let the mods deal with it. PM them if you feel that strongly about it.

I personnally feel that it can make the place look unfriendly if we have lots of people calling for bannings and sin bins.

Its a bit like pi****g into the wind when you complain about exposure (so to speak).

Can anybody please help me? I'm having terrible problems controlling my streetmagic- I can't walk down a street without turning into a pub.

Lets not forget that the majority of these secret seekers already have some knowledge as the majority are young people who are into magic, obsessed with the Ellusionist culture and want to know what the 'latest cool trick' is for free!! They could easily pass such a test, or just google the answer..

The best way to deal with them is either to ignore them.. or refer them to Mallusionist.. which has given me many many laughs.. and through that they may find their Brad Chrsitian heaven ( or hell, depending on how you look at it ).

An idea would be to have every new member's first 3 posts approved by a moderator before they go up. If it's possible of course.

At http://www.talkmagic.co.uk/ftopic14911.php Mandrake wrote:Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but I have to say that this idea has been suggested several times before, the last time quite recently in fact. It isn't a practical possibility to introduce as it requires 24/7 Moderator time and attention to deal with things and we just don't have that time and availability.

Quick thoughts:

a) you can find the answer to any question on the internet
b) if you ask one so hard you can't, you exclude genuine newbies

most people who have any general knowledge of magic know what its called when you take off two cards of the deck instead of one.
