Am I past it?

Postby Flyinbrian » Jul 10th, '07, 16:46

What age do most magicians 'start'. I'm 26 and just a beginner but everyone i've spoke to started at 4 or 5 years old. I hope to go semi-pro one day and make a few bob after i finish uni. I'm worried i'll be past it.

I started at 25. Im doing a couple of weddings next year and one this summer.

Your advantaged starting early but any age you take up magic, as long as you take it seriously, can lead to a nice supplement to your income.

I'm 25 and a beginner! Doesn't matter as long as you enjoy it and have fun!

No, I don't think it's ever too late when it comes to magic. I can't really think of many effects or sleights that would be reliant on the magician's age in order to be performed successfully. I started magic as a hobby when I was in my teens, so certainly not as young as four or five. But then I have no plans on going semi-pro, so best of luck with that. As long as you give the art the practice and dedication required, I don't foresee any problems. (Although a little innate talent helps, too!) :D

I've not been doing it that long, and I'm 36. Not doing too badly either, if I say so myself. :)
Starting out at an early age is good of course, but there's no way I could have had the same presentation skills I have now, and I don't think I could have even understood something like Royal Road, let alone pull of the sleights.

Wasn't Eugene Burger in his thirties when he became a professional magician? Now he is one of the most respected in the business.

Allegedly there are a couple of guys locally doing a good trade in Weddings, Parties and so on who only took up magic on their retirement at 65. Hope for me yet....

Always Follow Your Dreams

Postby Amanda Angeli » Jul 10th, '07, 19:10

Hello FlyinBrian,

Of course you are not too old for no matter our age, we all dream. And it is to the brave who have the courage to follow their dreams that magic comes. Not all of us have the time others have but we all have what we have here and now and with that, we can be whatever we dream if we dream it with passion and never give up no matter what.

With age comes experience and wisdom and so while there are many who began this dream of magic in youth, it is to those with maturity through life experience that magic finds art for maturity brings us wisdom of ourselves.

I am so happy for you that you are here now. And, if this is your dream, then please don't give it up no matter what. You are never too old for anything for while you may not be able to do some things such as play professional sports or some such thing, we can all participate in anything at our age in one way or another. So all we have to do is to use our wisdom to find pleasure in that which we can do.

Go for it and always follow your dreams.

Love,

Amanda Angeli

Age is irrelevant. What is important is attitude and I'm afraid with your attitude you won't make it. Be positive, be passionate and follow your dreams.

Nonsense.. He was merely asking a question... as he is not in the know. I had the same doubts just 18months ago.. im heading off to Florida in 2 months to do a wedding..

Attitude is something that we develop.. or stage.. or fake.

Flynbrian.. put your heart and soul into it mate.. take it as far as you want to go!!
