Just feel like telling a story... this is the reason I wasn't on here much yeserday.

While here on TM in my bedroom, I thought "Hmm... I feel like some good ol' fashioned popcorn". So, I went downstairs, turned the stove on, and filled a popcorn pot with Corn Oil. I then put it on the burner, waiting for it to heat up. I then quickly went back upstairs, finished typing my message here, and when I went back downstairs, the WHOLE KITCHEN was quickly filling up with smoke!!!! Who knew Corn Oil was flammable :)

I ran in, holding my breath as I picked up the burning pot, threw it in the sink, and turned on the cold water. I should have backed away because that cold water induced a HUGE thick cloud of grey smoke!!! I called my sister, totally unaware of the situation, for help. She helped try to clear the air around the smoke detector, which went off on several different occasions.

We then ran around opening every door and window in the house, coughing and wheezing the entire time. I tried to run and get the laptop, but couldn't make it in that toxic gas. My sister and I ended up sitting outside playing cards with my Series 1800 deck for one hour... I then went in and got two bottle of Febreze, then running around the house and spraying it everywhere. That helped greatly, and within one hour the house was virtually smoke-free. The burnt pot was resting outside, nd the house still smelled of smoke, but I am glad I came downstairs when I did, or else it could have been disastrous.

That's my story of the day. :)

You don't throw water on an oil based fire. This is the same reason that I suggest 14 year olds don't play with flash paper - they don't know what the hell they are doing.

I'm glad that nothing really bad happened, though, Mike. Situations like this can get way out of hand. At least you didn't burn the house down and you learned a valuable lesson:

Don't leave something unattended on the stove while it is lit and don't throw water on an oil based fire.

Simply, put a lid on the pan. Deprive the fire of what it needs to live - oxygen.

Mike.

I smell an insurance job. At 14 you dont know not to put water on an oil fire? I am shocked.

This is what happens when you spend to much time on magic forums and not learning about the basics of life. Next time there is an oil fire think of oil and water the black cards all ways rise to the top.

I am master of misdirection, look over there.

We are not falling out young Welshy, we are debating, I think farlsy is an idiot he thinks I am one. We are just talking about who is the bigger idiot.

Ahh I see what you mean.. I had no idea what to do, and I basically panicked. A lesson well learned.

I really liked that you felt you had to add that you played cards with your series 1800 deck, instead of just playing cards.

what mike jay said cannot be reitterated enough. NEVER put water anywhere near an oil based fire. In my 14 years as a chef, that simple mistake caused some of the most horrific burn injuries I have seen.

Even a little bit in oil being cooked with can make it spit badly whereas throwing it on top of burning fat can cause unbelievable flashes, burning all around it in an instant. Even smoking fat can be ignited by water. If covering the fat, do so carefully by placing the lid away from you or the flames will only be blowin towards you.

And just in case it wasnt a joke, blowing it is a bad idea

Glad you are ok Michael, we live and learn eh?

not a fan of sigs, so I won't bother adding o..... oh

I had the same! I did some bread in the microwave but something went wrong and when I came back downstairs to check how far it was.. the whole kitchen was in smoke and out of the microwave came thick heavy smoke! The microwave still smells BAD after 3 weeks now..
