It Just Worked Out That Way!

Postby Michael Kras » Jul 10th, '07, 03:43

Have you ever had an experience when performing where, after screwing up, an outcome happens unexpectedly that is very strong? For example, my story:

At my recent graduation party, I was throwing some card effects around. I was going to do the gag where the magician holds a card up to his face, face down, and asks the spectators to name a card. They name a cgard, you turn your card over and say "WRONG!!".... always gets laughs. So I tried it.. puled out the Four of Diamonds and asked him to name a card. Naturally, he sayd "Four of Diamonds!" I am more astonished then him when I reveal the card, but I do my best to contain it.

Any stories? Please share them!

I have one although it wasn't exactly a routine that went wrong....

It was just last weekend in fact, and I was holding a deck of cards out, and I said to my Dad "name any card". He named the four of clubs. I then said "turn over the top card". He looked at me in the usual peculiar way. What usually happens is people turn over anything but their named card and I say that "I'm not that good!" I use it as to get a bit of a laugh. On this occassion, he actually turned over the four of clubs.

Sadly I didn't turn it into a strong finish because I was laughing too much!

Some little snot wanted to catch me out, as teenage boys often do, so he waited until my back was turned, picked up a card, and slipped in back in the deck. "

I'm ready," he says.

Feigning disinterest, "For what?" I implore.

"Find my card," he replies.

Unbeknownst to him, I watched the whole process out of the corner of my eye. I've got a good estimate of where his card went, so I pick up the deck near where I saw it go in and have him look at the card I cut to. Cue "jaw dropping" sound effect here.

I have a story where I was able to extend a trick based on the outcome.

I was doing a simple 'find a card' trick and noticed that it was the 2 of spades - for those of you who have a masters deck (bicycle brand, with the 2 O7 5P4D3S as the barcode - aka 2 of spades)
Based on the fact I had only just got the masters deck I really played on it, and managed to convince the spectator - an old school mate who I hadnt seen in about 6 months - that I knew all along that she would pick that card and that subliminaly I made her do it (derrin brown style)

It was awsome, couldnt have worked out better, and it hasn't ever happened since :)

I think I'm posessed when it comes to playing cards, because this sort of thing has happened to me more times than I care to remember.

One time I was doing some card tricks for a few friends when, hoping to get a laugh, I spread out the cards and asked this girl to think of any card. I knew I was going to get it wrong. But I stared at her anyway and pretended to concentrate. Then I said "7 of Diamonds" and she almost fainted. It was like the Mindpower Deck, only with pure luck.

A couple of days ago I was practicing my Shapeshifter change, and I asked my mom to name any card. She said 3 of Clubs, and I told her to watch the card I was holding. I did the change and, much to both her and my surprise, the card transformed into the 3 of Clubs.

A while back a friend and I were messing around, doing some pathetic kid magic tricks, just having a good time. And he tells me to name any card in the deck. I say 10 of Clubs. Then he divides the deck in half, and tells me to get rid of one. Using the one I kept, he split it up again, telling me to eliminate one. This goes on until there are two cards left. (Note, the entire time I kept playing it off like I was completely confident, making remarks like "Man, I'm telling you, the 10 of Clubs is my favorite card, and I know where it's at".) And, of course, I got it right.
... He went crazy.

Roughly two hours ago, i was doing a few tricks for a couple of guys in the pub when they tried to catch me out. I had just done a trick from (i think) Crash Course 1 from Ellusionist. Its where a card is selected and shuffled into the deck all by the spectator, and you then tell them the card. Very simple, but very effective.

They tried to catch me out by just cutting to any random card and asking me if i knew what it was. I said 'sure', just stalling for time and trying to figure out a way to get out of it. In the end i just said 'Yeah, 8 of Clubs.'

It only was the 8 of Clubs! They went crazy! I had to look twice!

I was born with Multiple Personality Disorder. Luckily, they are all me, they just dont always get along...
