Techniques of the Professional Pickpocket

Postby Phate » Feb 9th, '07, 20:15

The Effect

This book is all about the diversions and techniques that professional pickpockets all around the world use.

On the first page, it says:

This book is sold for informational purposes only. The publisher will not be held accountable for the use of misuse of the information contained in this book.

Guess why they wrote that? Because they will actually learn you how to pick pockets, not just some stupid diversions!

Cost

Depends on where you get it. A friend of mine gave it to me for free. ^^ If you don't have so many friends, you could get it from Amazon. ;)

Difficulty
(1=easy to do, 2=No sleights, but not so easy, 3=Some sleights used,
4=Advanced sleights used, 5=Suitable for experienced magicians only)

A big 5. It's all about sleights that must be used perfect and diversions that must be used on the right moment. One little mistake, and the effect is gone. And if you're misusing this on the streets, you might get arrested to. :P

Review

I love this book! I'll give you the Contents list:

    Introduction
    The Pickpocket
    Why Pockets can be Picked
    The Mark
    The Diversion
    The Pants Pockets
    The Jacket Pockets
    The Watch
    How Pickpockets Practice
    The Quick Hit Artist
Foiling the Pickpocket and Purse Snatcher
    Bibliography

The Chapters "Introduction", "The Pickpocket", "Why Pockets can be Picked", "The Mark" and "Diversions" are one big introduction to the world of Pickpocketing. You know what... I'll just tell something about every chapter:

Chapter 1: Introduction
This chapter isn't really important... The authors tells about a vacation to Rome, and that he was pickpocketed there... Also a big chunk of information about the history of pickpocketing.

Chapter 2: The Pickpocket
A little bit statistic information about pickpocketing. How big the chance is you'll get busted etcetera. Not very interessting.

Chapter 3: Why Pockets can be Pikked
How come people won't notice the fact that their wallet is being removed from their pocket? They'll also explain you why diversions are so important.

Chapter 4: The Mark
A little walk-through on how "marks" are selected, and how you can protect yourself from becoming the "mark" yourself.

Chapter 5: The Diversion
I won't tell you to much about this chapter, because this is one of the best chapters. All I can tell you is that it
is really good! It contains various diversions to distract people's attention from their wallet. Very good!

Chapter 6: The Pants Pockets
This chapters tells you how to empty someones pockets. I won't tell you to much, but the techniques explained in this chapter
are very realistic. You can use them in real-life if you've practised them enough. But only for entertaining purposes afcourse!

Chapter 7: The Jacket Pockets
This chapter won't tell you how to empty all the pockets of someones jacket, only the inner pocket. Very good, but not so
usefull when someones jacket is closed.

Chapter 8: The Watch
How do you steal someones watch while shaking hands without them noticing? Very good!

Chapter 9: How Pickpockets Practice
How do they practice? Read the book if you want to find out!

Chapter 10: The Quick Hit Artist
A little bit information about "Quick Hitters" Not very usefull, unless you have no style...

Chapter 11: Foiling the Pickpocket and Purse Snatcher
Nice chapter, but not so stunning as I expected it to be. It tells you how to make sure you don't get pickpocketed,
but it isn't very impressive.

Overall

Very nice book! Even the chapters that don't contain the fancy moves are very interessting, except for the chapters 1, 10 and 11 maybe.
But all the others are very good! It just teaches you how to pick someones pockets, but for entertaining purposes only afcourse. ;)

If you come across this book, buy it! This book is so good!

10/10!!!

If someone has any questions, just ask!

Simply put; illegal. Don't do it.

I used pick with my buddies all of the time in San Diego. Haven't done it in a while now, but I do incorporate it into routines.

For example, a few weeks ago, I was in a mall and I saw a man I thought would like magic. I took his wallet, read up on his name, ect, and put it back. I then went up to him, showed him a ACR, and told him I'd do some mentalism. I predicted his name, address, and credit card numbers. He was absolutely amazed, and didn't mind the violation of me knowing these things.

However, I would never do that often, as it's incredibly risky. I spent some time in jail for that sort of stuff. I really didn't care about the money when I picked though, it was mostly the rush I got from takin 'em.

Like I said, I haven't done it for at least ten years.

There is another book on that subject.

How to Pick Pockets
by Eddie Joseph
This is a treatise on the fundamental principle, theory and practice of picking pockets that has become a classic text on the subject. A soft cover, A-5 size 24 pages booklet that explains the subject from the entertainment angle under the controlled conditions of stage performers. In seven chapters Eddie Joseph clearly details every aspect of the pick pocket act.
A pick pocket act makes for an excellent bit of variety in any Magic Show. It creates an impression of incredible skill by the performer. Famous Magicians like Harry Blackstone Jr. have featured it. In the act volunteers from the audience are invited on stage for their assistance in some magic effect. As they are returning to their seats, the Magician hands them several of their personal belongings, like spectacles, wallets, watches and so on that the Magician has 'pick pocketed' while they were on the stage. Their amazement is bound to amuse the entire audience, and makes an entertaining interlude in any magic act.

Pickpocket Act

Postby Amanda Angeli » Jul 13th, '07, 20:05

Hello All,

I love this book Techniques of the Professional Pickpocket. I bought it when it was put out by Loompanics long ago and have used it to help lead me to explore the art in depth in books, dvd's, and of course, practice. As an act, of course.

It's a wonderful book and if you are interested in Pickpocket Magic as part of your act, I'd highly recommend it.

I particularly loved the chapter dealing with practice and it motivated and inspired me to make all kinds of pickpocket training dummies out in my Magic Workshop.

Love,

Amanda Angeli

Talking of pickpockets. And we were (You can check the thread topic if you don't believe me).

I met James Freedman on a train once and he invited me to a lecture at the magic circle he was giving. He is a great handler of cards, but this lecture was on the art of stage pickpocketing.

I have to say (no one is making me and yet I still HAVE to say it) it was one of the best/most entertaining and insightful lectures I have ever attended.

The art of the stag* pickpocket seems so far away these days, apart from that lecture I do not know when the last time I saw such an act was, albeit live or on the television. What a shame this is for when done well, I think it can be quite a wonderful act.

James had rigged up various training dummies himself. Your workshop truly does sound like a delightful place.

*ok. Who stole my e?

Talking of James Freedman (and I was you can check the - oh yes. I already did that one)

http://www.pickpocket.co.uk/

It has made me think I should book him for a lecture or even one of our world class conventions (Ipswich 21 Oct 2007). Would many people be interested in seeing him lecture?
