how do you age a coin?

Postby Atomo » Jul 16th, '07, 20:52

Hi TM,

I have had an on going obsession with Homer Liwag's CoinOne routine for quite some time now. Everyone has one favourite which they keep on practing constantly, and for me it is this one. This is the third exp****d coin Sh**l that i have bought specifically for this trick, a shiny £2 one from JBTV magic, which fits perfectly and has great detail.

My problem is that this £2 coin sh**l is too clean and shiny, it almost looks as if its fresh out of the factory. For this routine to be convincing it must look exactly like the other regular coins. Does anyone know the correct way to age a coin in a short space of time, so that it appears worn in and genuinely old.

Your help would be very much appreciated, and other than being to clean (!) i can reccomend highly JB magic's exp ****d £2 sh**l, it was the cheapest out there at £28, and it very good quality.

all the best

carry it around in your pocket nested for a few days it will soon dull off.

coating in malt vinegear can be risky way to age it also a gental buffing with wire wool then pocketed can achieve quick results.

There's an old thread somewhere on TM about aging a key which, if I remember right, included the ideas of covering it in brown sauce to let the acid eat into the metal and remove the shine, bury it in the soil outside for a few days, leave it in a bowl of dirty rainwater for a few days and similar ideas. It's probably possible to artificially age it with paint and varnish but that might wear off so accelerated natural aging such as mentioned above might make your coin look less new.

Before you go testing ways on your new shell, why not try aging a real coin first and in theory, what works for the real one will work for the shell, without putting it at risk of accidental damage

You'll still be able to spend the real one afterwards too so the trial and error is free

It's not really an optical illusion - it just looks like one!

thank you for the quick response everyone, TM never fails!
I am going to try carrying the coin around in my pocket for a few dqays. Then if that doesnt do the trick, i will try some of the other methods mentioned. I do remember hearing that just leaving a coin outside will age it quickly.

Thanks alot guys!

Im not sure what kind of effect this would have on the coin s****, so you would have to try it on a normal shiney coin first (so as not to damage your s****)

Anyways, I used to play Warhammer (hardly play, just liked painting the models) and used to use an ink to stain the skin to show the details in the plastic - eg to stain the muscles on the arms / facial features - its called Indian Ink and can be purchased from most Games Workshops / model pain shows (such as ModelZone)

It costs around £2 from the Warhammer website

I remember I had this problem with my coin unique...i solved it though...when I spent the coin...oh, how I punched myself..
