Magic moves-

Postby Kenneth » Jul 17th, '07, 19:30

this should be a fun thread-

When all the dirty work of a trick is finished and thats left for you to do is reveal the climax, everybody does a "magic move"
Magic Wands are out of style- so what do you do in place of it?

I was doing a Red-Hot Mama style trick for my best friend's 6 year old nephew, and I love kids, so I was playing around with him, and when the final part of the trick was ready- I had us stand up and do a tribal dance to call down the Card-God... it was alot of fun, and it definatly added a more playful feel to magic, it wasnt the delicate, edgy style...

I dont think I can do this with anyone over the 8 years old...What do you do, I'm kinda sick of snapping my fingers or flicking or shaking the deck.

\if the circumstances are right I get everyone to blow on the deck or whatever else I may be using. A bit like blowing out imaginary birthday candles

Do it with adults and nearly everyone giggles afterwards

I used to do an Ammar-esque 'cast a shadow' type move.

Now I just let a huge ball of etherial green light eminate from my magical inner being and fill their eyes with wonder.

(If it weren't so poo outside, I wouldn't HAVE to use Roughing Spray in a confined space...)

Anyhow, what I REALLY usually do is rub my fingers like a chef sprinkling salt. I don't quite know why... perhaps it's mimicking 'magic dust' or something. It works for me tho!

Nice topic by the way. (Izzy Wizzy, Let's Get Bizzy!)

in my triumph patter i say i was visited in a dream by a medicine man who told me about native americans working in the card factory and that some of them infuse the cards with strong medicine which allows you to do this... heyaaahaaammaaa heeyyaaaahaaammaaa. and wave my hands over the deck really slowly. but normally just a boring click of the fingers or a flick of the deck I'm afraid.

Hahah, I really like the idea of mentioning the card factory...
I just remembered one I did to my friends in a bar once.
I started going "Ooga chucka Ooga chucka Ooga Chucka" then said it only works if they started chanting.. then i started singing "I cannt stop this feeeliinng deep insiiiddee of meeee......IIIII I'm hooked on a feeeelliiinn" then DL'd to show an indifferent card. and was like "...oh...well you guys did soemthing wrong" and flicked the deck and lifted the top card to show the selected card.

I'm just boring- I snap my fingers and wave my outstretched hand over the deck. However, I have recently been using a long sharpened pencil as a "wand". If I ever do tricks such as jazz aces, before I reveal the transfer, I touch the back of the pack in my hand with the tip of my pencil, look at it intentley and then touch it onto the face down card above the ace. The reason I use a pencil is because it fits in with my "image" better- white shirt, brown waistcoat and "casual" jacket with black trousers (strange for a 16 year old I know!!) The pencil seems to go better than a magic wand in my top waistcoat pocket. I usually weave a story around it when I introduce it at the beginning aswell...

For triumph (and this is a very valued "find" of mine, so don't use it  ) I found that you can make the deck "shudder". If you square the deck very hard on opposite diagonals, the friction causes the cards to independently of each other, shudder. It looks great, and is a nice magic moment before revealing the fact that all the cards are now facing the same way.

Today at a coffee shop I was pretty wired on espresso, and was showing my friend card tricks and took the deck in my right hand, and slammed it down to my left hand, like springing the cards, but just throw the deck down. It makes a good noise and makes people blink, you can say that that "Loosens the cards to make them move like they should" or so on...
