Magic = Medicinal?

Postby Bananachek » Jul 12th, '07, 05:37

It's been said that magic can be used to brighten someone's day. No matter who you are, where you are, or what you are doing, people respond to magic. But what about the magician? I'm not sure if it's just me, but whenever I'm going through a tough time in my life, simply practicing magic seems to heal a good portion of that mental anguish. It almost seems that magic is like a modern-day medicine for anyone; magician or spectator.

Just sit me down with a deck of cards and a TV on showing episodes of Friends, and I am cured. I totally agree!

Maybe it's just me, but I find acquisition of knowledge and skill very rewarding.

Mastering something that at one time seemed almost impossible is incredibly gratifying. The joy of learning magic is that you are aquiring knowledge you can go out and put to use.

As a talentless buffoon coasting through life on nothing but sheer luck, learning a skill and an art, that very few others can do well, it's incredibly satisfying

I find practicing new moves or sleights incredibly frustrating and usually makes me growl everytime I get it wrong. Saying this though the sense of achievement gained when you perform the 'move' perfectly a few times in a row and you realise you finally have it down is great and totally worth it.
I'm currently in the midst of learning the first link on ninja rings
(spinning ring on table) and spent most of last evening swearing (mostly blasphemious) and chasing around a rogue metal ring.
medicinal? No, I'll go to the doctors thank you but a worthwhile hobby that makes me happy? Yes!

I find exercise is a better cure but there is something very poetic and calming about getting a new move learned "just right"

Nija rings are great, I'm still learning with them and have managed to get to about 4 times in 5 on the first link, I refuse to move on until I can get it nearly every single time! Subborn? me? never ;)

Magic truly can lift spirits

Postby Amanda Angeli » Jul 13th, '07, 17:22

Hello Everyone,

I so agree with everyone here, magic can indeed lift spirits and make us feel good as well as our audience.

We are all so blessed to be able to do what we do.

Love,

I deliberately chose magic and mentalism as a pursuit when I was looking for a way to tackle stress. It can be highly stressful part way through a routine when you suddenly wonder what the hell you are doing or whether something is working but that is 'good' stress, fun and exciting. Concentrating on solving puzzles, perfecting a technique or whatever is a great distraction as well s something which can lead to a sense of accomplishment. Add to that the reward from other peoples reactions and its an out and out winner.
