Joke Tricks

Postby Kemo » Jul 25th, '07, 01:47

ok joke tricks, in case you don't know what they are... they are tricks where you do silly things to make the trick work like:

A)Having all the cards facing you and telling a spectator to pick a card and then telling them what it is.

B)Having the cards on the table telling a spectator to pick any card then place it back in the middle. Then you snap your fingers(or whatever) and you say i brought you card up to the top, and not only that i changed into the<insert name of top card>

just silly things like that

any one else do tricks like that? does any one have any views on weather they hurt a routine or help it or do they have no really impact what soever?

I do a couple goofy ones to start my act, but joke magic usuaully has its best impact when its done so that the ending suprisingly works out a little different then what the spectators thought you intended to do.

I think the only reason i'd do this is if I mess up the trick-
I mess up alot though, so i guess i do do this alot!
I dont think I would do a little gag like this, save it for that moment you need it, most people wont realize you messed up the trick, so if you only do it once people will just think your being a wiseguy

I did a cute blindfold trick that usually got some laughs. I held up a deck and the folded black blindfold saying I was going to divine their card while wearing the blindfold. Then I would lay the cards face up on the table and say: "I will know unfold the blindfold and tie it around my head so that you can pick a card and I can tell you which one you have chosen." I would then unfold the blindfold revealing it had two holes cut in it   ! It's a bit long, but then I go into a real blindfolded revelation.

For tricks where you get to see the card they pick anyway (like when they have to sign it), i let them pick a card and hand it to me. Holding up the card i say, look at the card, it's very important that this is not a marked card. See, no markings at all. Then i turn the card around, so that the back is facing them and the front is facing me.

Look, there are no marking on the backside either, so it's impossible for me to know what card you selected ...

Funny thing is, sometimes they are so busy looking for markings, they don't even realize i can see the face of the card at that moment.

I like silly things like this, I think they're a nice way of ingratiating yourself to the spectators, as it shows you don't take yourself too seriously (which personally I consider to be one of the worst things a magician can do).

Cheeky things like obviously getting a glimpse of the card can be a nice way to start something like an ACR, or any trick where it doesn't matter if you see the card anyway.

I've used and seen other magicians perform what is called, "The Cow Pasture Shuffle".

Basically, holding the deck in one hand, you do nothing more than drop a small block of cards from the bottom of the deck, to your awaiting outstretched empty hand. Repeat by dropping another small block of cards (Pause) and again drop yet another block of cards. Keep dropping small blocks of cards, until all the cards have been dropped.

The spectators will automatically fill in the puchline of the joke, as to why it's called the Cow Pasture Shuffle

a shuffel i use occasionally to get a laugh is called the newfie shuffle(or which ever group your country pokes fun at for the english it could be the Chave[sp?] shuffle)

you just cut the deck into two piles and hold them at oppisites sides of the table and riffle them as if you were to do a riffle shuffle then stack the deck back in the same order as it began

hope that isn't too confusing

I sometimes talk about different ways of shuffling, show them an over hand telling them what it is, then a hindu shuffle, riffle etc etc.

I ask them if they've heard of the lester shuffle, always they so no so you hand them a stack of cards and start shuffling what you have left saying "now i have less ter shuffle" then quickly go into a trick. It's more a groan thing but gives you a chance to get the spect holding your cards and you could doa trick from there.

David Stone does one holding the face of the card to the spectator saying do you remember the face of your card? turns it around and says, and do you remember the back as well? Pretty funny

One of my favorite "joke" routines is the McCombical Prediction. It starts out as just a comedy sucker style effect but actually has a great finish. Always gets a great reaction for me.

One I use is I shuffle the cards, ask spec to take one and tell me what it is, then I ask them if it reminds them of their first sexual experience.
They say no. Shuffle again, they take card, I ask them again, they say no.

Then I say "Tell you what, YOU shuffle the cards."

And while they're shuffling I say "Bet THAT reminds you opf your first sexual experience!"
