There are actually several societies that meet in and around London. The Magic Circle being the most prestigious.

See the list of societies in my sig for more info.

The Circle meets on Mondays - but see the website for the information you need.

Thanks for the details guys. Out of interest how long is the performance you have put on?

How high a standard do you have to be to join? For example could you demonstrate a few simple tricks performed well and gain membership or do the tricks have to be some what advanced ie showing them your ACR will bore the pants off them?

Id love to hear from any current members to give me their views of the club.

Also - I note that payment is due before the interview - can this be reclaimed if entrance to the club is not granted?

Cheers and sorry for the long post,

A

I'm not entirely sure that the Magic Circle is the kind of club that you can simply apply to join. I'm sure there's some kind of nominations process involved. I'm probably wrong though - the Magic Circle wouldn't touch me with a barge pole!

you must be nominated by 2 members of the magic circle that have known you for at least a year.

Also, payment is (as far as I know) reimbursed if your application is unsuccessful

not a fan of sigs, so I won't bother adding o..... oh

You pay two fees.

One is an audition fee that is not refundable if you're unsuccessful, and the second is an up-front membership fee that is refundable.

Is it really worth joining and worth the money? I know a few people who've let their membership lapse as they didn't feel they were getting anything out of it.
I am considering the IBM.

Perhaps not, but it is said that if you work in corporate circles then it adds a lot of credibility and membership can be the difference between getting some lucrative work.

There will always be different views on this topic :?

So it's like having a degree these days. It's the prestige of having it on your business card rather than what it can offer you.

Could be more of an NVQ rather than a degree

Actually, the three levels of membership are called "degrees"....reminds me of another organisation I belong to.....

I've been an amateur magician for many years, and I've lost count of the number of times I've been asked "Are you in The Magic Circle?" At last I can say yes.

If you're able to get to HQ on Monday nights it's very much worth joining; lectures, shows and access to the reference and lending libraries are all included in your sub. There's also an excellent monthly magazine.

I am only a short journey from central london and i would indeed be able to make most meetings.

Recently turning semi-professional I feel that joining the club would gain me more business. Im sure all of us who perform regularly have been asked the inevitable question of membership. I also find my local club, while good fun, is aimed mostly for newer performers of magic and while we do have a limited number of extremely good performers at the club, the numbers are few.

Luckily I do know of 2 or 3 magic circle members who i have now known for quite some time.

dat8962 - how much is the performance fee? Cheers, Alex

Hmmm...I don't know of any magic clubs around my aera (Merseyside/Liverpool)

All these clubs and magic circle stuff has never really took my fancy. I just "do it" don't really have anybody to talk to about magic, except on here.

There's plenty of readily-available information on the application procedure (including current fees) - perhaps a quick look here would answer a few questions
