Greed, it's quite possible that you are better than you think. After all, you are your own worst critic. If your audiences are walking away completely entertained and they're saying this, then that is the true measure of your ability.
As others have said, there are thousands of terrible performers. I went to San Francisco for a weekend trip, and while shopping along Fisherman's Wharf, I happened upon a magician performing a cups and balls routine. He had three or four people watching him, and when I stepped up, I noticed a few minor flashes - but thought nothing of it because of the whole "I know where to look". However, he made NO attempts to cover his final loads (3 of the 4 spectators asked out loud "why is he holding a lime in his hand?), and his presentation was little more than shouting at us while waving his wand in our faces.
Just a few blocks later was another performer doing some card magic. In the few minutes I was there, he dropped his deck 3 times, botched the finale to his triumph effect (he ended with 10 or so cards reversed, instead of 1).
So yes, there are MANY bad performers. However, don't for one moment take that into account when it comes to people commenting on and complimenting your ability. Comments like that are not given freely or "just for the hell of it". The fact that there are thousands of bad magicians is not the only reason you are seen as better, I'm sure.
