For A Beginner

Postby Allen Tipton » Jul 31st, '07, 19:58

:) Roflsauce: You've had some good advice. So
1. Don't buy lots of tricks. JUST the odd one.
2. For a beginner: Don't buy instructional dvd's. They will only make you
copy and imitate. save these for later on and then only use them to
see but NOT copy other magician's styles. Use their tricks but in YOUR
OWN way. The most useful thing dvds provide is a look at handling.
3. Get into books. Try your library. These will make you study and THINK.
4. For a beginner look at the karl Fulves Self Working books as
SW Card Tricks.
SW Close Up Card Tricks
SW Coin Magic
SW Handkerchief Tricks.
SW Mental Magic
SW Number Magic
SW Rope Magic.
SW Paper Magic
SW Table Magic
These all retail at around £6:95

Although for beginners there are some excellent tricks & ideas in these books.
Amazon sells a Karl Fulves box Set ( 3 books,( cards, hankies, coins) 3 coins, 2 cotton handkerchief & a deck of cards) Called K F Magic at about £12.
Also from Amazon Bill Severn's Complete Book Of Magic ( 507 pages on Mental, Coins/bills, Rope/string) at about £5:95

Then buy Maximum Entertainment by Ken Webber for an easy to read source on presentation & showmanship. The other 'must reads' on this vital, all important side of performance are a long way off for a beginner to understand.

Proceed slowly Don't go mad buying stuff which will only end up in the cupboard..

Consider his style too! look at the way he held the attention of the audience, they loved him and his magic. He was gentle, warm and friendly. Remember magic is about entertainment as well as tricks. Good luck with your magic studies.
